Book Description
Excerpt from Work and Play With Numbers It has been recognized ever since the days of Pestalozzi that children when they first enter school have a taste for number work and also a considerable knowledge of numer ical forms. They use numbers in their games, they talk about them, they like to count, and they enjoy a little work and play with numbers within their mental grasp. On the other hand, children of this age are not ready for such a study of arithmetic as the formal textbook offers. A textbook of that kind would take away their love for number and would place upon them a burden heavier than they could carry. Not to begin the study of the subject when the child enters school, however, is to say that the child's natural tastes should not be fostered. What we need is to intro duce, in an informal and attractive fashion, such number work as is within his grasp at this time. Experience shows that children can easily learn the combinations in addition, and part of those in multipli cation, before taking up a formal study of the subject; in other words, they can cover the work included in this little book. Since the entire multiplication table is some times required, it is given at the end of the book, to be developed in the usual manner if necessary. The Triangle Arithmetics

The Triangle Arithmetics PDF Author: Leo John Brueckner

Pages : 128

Book Description
Excerpt from The Triangle Arithmetics: Teachers' Handbook for Grades One and Two How does number touch the life experiences of young children in a natural way? The answer to this question will depend greatly upon the community in which the child lives and the richness of his home environment. The farm child will meet number in situations not so familiar to the child who lives in the city and vice versa. There are, however, many situations related to number which are common to the work and play of children wherever they may live. It is highly important that the primary teacher know the child experiences in which number plays a part, so that she may draw upon the child's past experiences to make her number work interesting and meaningful. The experiences listed in this chapter are not to be regarded as a course of study to be taught but rather as a survey of the many ways in which a young child encounters number in his home, his community, and his school. This chapter will serve as the background for the actual course of study which is outlined in Chapter Two. It provides ways and means of approaching number teaching in the classroom. The teacher should take the experiences listed here and find which of them have been experienced by her group so that she may use them as her basis for approaching beginning number in terms of the child's experience and understanding and interests. The American Girl's Home Book

The American Girl's Home Book PDF Author: Helen Campbell
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331315578
Category : Crafts & Hobbies
Languages : en
Pages : 460

Book Description
Excerpt from The American Girl's Home Book: Of Work and Play American Girls' Home Book of Work and Play was prepared; and though there are many points in which it might be bettered, it has proved the safe and trusty com panion of a good many girls who have studied the third part eagerly, and have found it, as they say, precisely the help they needed. Two chapters are added to the present edition: one on candy-making, which has proved itself a practical and profitable home occupation; the other on A New Home Industry, a new form of mosaic-work both pretty and practical. Naturally in five years countless games have been in vented, and have had their day, the old favorites calmly holding their own, and returned to always with the sense of satisfaction found in familiar and well-tested friends. It would be quite possible to make many alterations and additions, where this portion of the book is concerned, but the gain would be but trifling, since the children of each generation reproduce the games of the last, and are all, in this direction, conservatives of the first water. And so, having turned over the pages diligently, the author leaves them as they stand, knowing that other books will give the newest thing told in the newest way, but that she may still count upon friends for the Old, as well as hope for new ones to come. Book Description
Excerpt from The Book of Games: With Directions How to Play Them The object of this little book is to give, to those who need them, a number of new games, with changes rung on the old favorites. It came to be written in this way. Some two years ago twenty people, particularly choice and congenial spirits, gravitated together and called themselves the Game Club. It was hardly a club, except in name, for there were no officers, and no dues, and no quarrels; but all were agreed upon a few necessary points. All felt that they cared more for games than for dancing. All were ready to lay aside their dignity and vanity for the sake of mak ing games a success. All agreed that the meet ings should be fortnightly and each time at a different member's house. All agreed to agree.
