Springvale Educational Village Project
Author: Northern Ireland: Northern Ireland Audit Office
Publisher: The Stationery Office
ISBN: 0102941157
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 84
Book Description
The project to build a higher education campus at Springvale in Belfast was first proposed in 1993, and in 1997 the University of Ulster and the Belfast Institute for Further and Higher Education submitted a joint proposal to the Department of Education in Northern Ireland to build three educational facilities on the site, including a campus for 3,000 students covering higher and future education courses. This project was designed to develop partnerships between educational providers and local communities to address the particular educational, cultural and social needs of West and North Belfast, as well as benefiting Northern Ireland in general. It was also intended to promote regeneration in an area marked by significant economic and social deprivation and educational underachievement. However, in October 2002, the University announced its withdrawal from the project due to financial concerns over its affordability. At this point, over nine million pounds had been spent on the project, with one of the three planned facilities (a community outreach centre) built and functional. This NIAO report examines the development and management of the project to identify lessons to be drawn for the future, and overall it concludes that, given the length of time spent developing this project and the major public and private funding commitments involved, it should have been handled much better, particularly in terms of risk management. Key lessons highlighted include the need for: an agreed and clear strategic vision from the outset; a single independent body established to oversee project management where two or more institutions are involved; and better communication with local communities on the risks involved to promote realistic community expectations.

My Booky Wook
Author: Russell Brand
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
ISBN: 1848940351
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 381
Book Description
Russell Brand grew up in Essex. His father left when he was three months old, he was bulimic at 12 and left school at 16 to study at the Italia Conti stage school. There, he began drinking heavily and taking drugs. He regularly visited prostitutes in Soho, began cutting himself, took drugs on stage during his stand-up shows, and even set himself on fire while on crack cocaine. He has been arrested 11 times and fired from 3 different jobs - including from XFM and MTV - and he claims to have slept with over 2,000 women. In 2003 Russell was told that he would be in prison, in a mental hospital or dead within six months unless he went in to rehab. He has now been clean for three years. In 2006 his presenting career took off, and he hosted the NME awards as well as his own MTV show, 1 Leicester Square, plus Big Brother's Big Mouth on Channel 4. His UK stand-up tour was sold out and his BBC Radio 6 show became a cult phenomenon, the second most popular podcast of the year after Ricky Gervais. He was awarded Time Out's Stand Up Comedian of the Year and won Best Newcomer at the British Comedy Awards. In 2007 Russell hosted both the Brit Awards and Comic Relief, and continued to front Big Brother's Big Mouth. His BBC2 radio podcast became the UK's most popular. Russell writes a weekly football column in the Guardian and is the patron of Focus 12, a charity helping people with alcohol and substance misuse. He also hosts a podcast, Under the Skin, in which he delves below the surface of modern society.
