The current study examined the relationship between sociocultural values (e.g., marianismo, familism, ethnic identity) and female gender-role orientation (e.g., femininity/masculinity) in gender-role conflict amongst Latina college students (N = 260) in higher education at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in the Western United States. The results indicated that Mexican American Latina College students who endorsed gender role attitudes of marianismo and adhered to the cultural value of familism experienced higher levels of gender-role conflict. Particularly, individuals who endorsed more marianismo experienced conflict with restrictive affectionate behavior (i.e., discomfort expressing feelings to another person) and individuals who adhered to familism experienced more conflict with success, power, and competition. Findings also indicated that ethnic identity was significantly and positively correlated to familism and gender-role orientation indicating that having a salient identification with the ethnic group can influence gender-role orientation and adherence to the cultural value of familism. Correspondingly, individuals who endorsed masculinity experienced higher levels of conflict with success, power, and competition and those who endorsed femininity experienced less conflict in expressing emotions and affection for others. Implications of the research and recommendations for future research are discussed.

He investigates four potential problem areas - role diffuseness, role vulnerability, role commitment versus career orientation, and value conflict - in a sample of one hundred and fifty secondary school teachers in a Midland town. The analysis shows how a teacher's commitment to a particular set of values exposes him or her to conflict in an achievement-oriented and pluralistic society. These conflicts, present in all schools, are seen in their clearest form among secondary modern school teachers. The author suggests that colleges of education, in emphasizing commitment and in assuming value consensus, predispose their students to conflict experiences. He indicates that internal career possibilities in schools and the influence of graduate or certified status are also important factors in conflict exposure. While accepting that certain role conflicts are important in the genesis of change, the author proposes that levels of dysfunctional conflict can be reduced by the action of head teachers, by structural change in the schools and innovations in teaching education.

This study examined the impact of gender role orientations on conflict styles used by superiors when in conflict with their subordinates. Previous studies examining differences in conflict styles based on biological sex have been contradictory and inconclusive. However, few studies have examined the conflict styles used based on gender role orientations. This study filled the gap using surveys collected via snowball sampling in order to collect self-reported data regarding the relationships between gender role orientations and conflict styles of superiors. The measures used included the BSRI to measure gender role orientations, and the ROCII-II to measure conflict styles in superior-subordinate relationships. This study found that men are more likely to use the dominating style of conflict and women are more likely to use integrating and avoiding. Masculine individuals were found to use dominating more often, androgynous individuals used integrating more often, and feminine individuals used avoiding more often. Gender role orientation was also found to be a significant predictor of the avoiding and obliging conflict styles.
