Book Description
As a heart attack survivor, you know that you must do everything within your power to prevent yourself from having another heart attack. The reason is simple; as a heart attack survivor, you are at greater risk of suffering another heart attack, one that could end your life. A Woman's Guide to Heart Attack Recovery provides heart attack survivors with a multi-faceted approach to preventing subsequent heart attacks. First, you need to empower yourself, and the way to do that is to learn as much as you can about your heart, the heart attack treatments you may have undergone, and, if you've only recently had your heart attack, the key steps to recuperation. You also need to know what to do in an emergency in case you experience another heart attack. Many chapters in this book — such as the ones on high blood pressure, diabetes, weight control, diet and exercise — are filled with information on how to achieve these specific goals. A heart attack can be a life-affirming wake-up call and many women find their life afterward to be better than it was before. Many of you will find it to be the impetus you need to make changes towards living a healthier life. A Women's Guide to Heart Attack Recovery is devoted to helping you do just that.

Reactive Oxygen Species and the Cardiovascular System

Reactive Oxygen Species and the Cardiovascular System PDF Author: Augusto C. Montezano
Publisher: Morgan & Claypool Publishers
ISBN: 1615043624
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 105

Book Description
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) influence various physiological processes including host defense, hormone biosynthesis, and cellular signaling. Increased ROS production (oxidative stress) is implicated in many diseases of the cardiovascular system, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, cardiac failure, stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease. ROS are produced throughout the cardiovascular system, in the kidney and central and peripheral nervous system. A major source for cardiovascular, renal, and neural ROS is a family of non-phagocytic NAD(P)H oxidases, including the prototypic Nox2 homologue-based NAD(P)H oxidase, as well as other NAD(P)H oxidases, such as Nox1 and Nox4. Other possible sources include mitochondrial electron transport enzymes, xanthine oxidase, cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, and uncoupled nitric oxide synthase (NOS). NAD(P)H oxidase-derived ROS is important in regulating endothelial function and vascular tone and oxidative stress is implicated in endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, hypertrophy, apoptosis, migration, fibrosis, angiogenesis and rarefaction, important processes involved in vascular remodeling in cardiovascular disease. These findings have evoked considerable interest because of the possibilities that therapies targeted against non-phagocytic NAD(P)H oxidase to decrease ROS generation and/or strategies to increase nitric oxide (NO) availability and antioxidants may be useful in minimizing vascular injury and thereby prevent or regress target organ damage associated with hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.

Women are Not Small Men

Women are Not Small Men PDF Author: Nieca Goldberg
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 488

Book Description
The single greatest health risk for women today-more than stroke and all cancers "combined-is heart disease. Yet despite this documented fact, heart disease is still considered primarily a "male problem," with the result that far too many women go untreated by doctors and are misinformed by the existing literature. Now, with this groundbreaking new book, Dr. Nieca Goldberg, the nation's leading expert on women's heart disease, has at last remedied this situation. "Women "Are Not Small Men presents detailed, decade-by-decade programs that give women at any age OF life the facts and the guidance they need to recognize, treat, and prevent heart disease. In the course of her work as founder and chief of the Women's Heart Program at New York's Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Goldberg has come to a startling realization: Women experience heart disease in a fundamentally different way than men do. The physiology of a woman's heart attack is not the same as a man's, the symptoms of heart disease and signs of impending heart attack differ for women, and once heart disease has been recognized, women often do not get the treatment and medications they need. In this accessible book, she uses these critical insights to build a complete treatment and prevention program geared to the unique needs of women. Engagingly written and grounded in compelling true patient stories, the book presents comprehensive instructions on what you can do to maintain or improve your heart health, including how to spot the warning signs of heart disease, the exercises and diet to follow for prevention and recovery, how to assess risk factors, techniques for reducing stress, the truth about estrogen and hormonereplacement therapy, which supplements and herbal remedies really work, and how to become your own advocate in dealing with the medical profession. Dr. Nieca Goldberg has made it her mission to give women the treatment and information they deserve. Now she makes her research, prevention program, and recovery strategies accessible to all women. Authoritative, caring, and up-to-the-minute, this is destined to become the women's health book of the new millennium.

A Woman's Heart Attack

A Woman's Heart Attack PDF Author: Dori A. Naerbo (Ph. d)
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781477604106
Category : Coronary heart disease
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
At my last cardiovascular visit, my doctor said, "You've completely healed yourself! I can see no evidence that you have had a heart attack!" NOW YOU CAN LEARN HOW TO PREVENT, RECOVER AND HEAL YOURSELF STEP BY STEP. After three consecutive heart attacks and with a fourth looming like a dark cloud, I had to take action and figure out why I was sick. I had to prevent the next heart attack. Numb, depressed, paralyzed with fear, and frustrated with traditional medicine, I started my mission, determined to solve the question that no one seemed to be able to answer for me. A Woman's Heart Attack: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You is a story of my healing journey and the specific steps I took to heal myself. Early into my research about my heart disease, I began to realize that I needed to use my body, mind, and spirit as one for healing to occur. For this reason, A Woman's Heart Attack: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You is divided into three parts, which address the body, mind, and spirit. I teach you step by step what I did to achieve healing and good health after surviving my heart attacks. The journey to health is truly amazing. You will learn some of the patterns that develop before a heart attack, the relationship between hormones and heart attacks, gender differences between women's and men's heart disease, how to prevent the next attack, and how to heal yourself. I started writing this book in 2005 as part of my own healing therapy, but later it grew into something much more and I realized that what I learned could help all women. This book became a guide to self healing and enlightenment. After my doctor gave me the good news of my fully healed heart, I knew it was time to finish the book and share what I did to bring about new heart health. My hope is that A Woman's Heart Attack: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You will help you in your quest for a healthy heart and the improved lifestyle that comes along with it.

A Woman's Heart

A Woman's Heart PDF Author: Angela Maas

Category : Health & Fitness

Pages : 208

Book Description
DID YOU KNOW... ...women are 50% more likely to be misdiagnosed following a heart attack? ...more than twice as many women die from coronary heart disease than from breast cancer in the UK? ...two-thirds of clinical research into heart disease focuses on men? Coronary heart disease remains the single biggest killer of women worldwide, yet it is still not seen as a woman's problem. Every day the female heart patient is measured by male standards, which leads to confusion, unclear diagnosis and often the wrong treatment. In fact, women are incomparable to men down to each body cell, which has consequences for both health and disease. When it comes to medical science, cardiology is the most prominent example in which gender matters. In A Woman's Heart, Professor Maas explores how the female heart works and provides practical advice for women, including: - The biology of the female heart - how it works and ages differently to a male's - The effects of female-specific issues, such as menopause - Heart attacks in women - Lifestyle tips to prevent heart disease This vital book is the result of decades of international research. It exposes the gender bias in cardiology and paves the way for better heart health for women everywhere.
