The Near North

The Near North PDF Author: Ivan Vladislavić
Publisher: Pan Macmillan South africa
ISBN: 177010903X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 177

Book Description
The Near North is a vivid account of life in Johannesburg in times of crisis. From the stony ridges of Langermann Kop in Kensington to the tree-lined avenues of Houghton, we follow the writer through the city's streets, meeting its ghosts and journeying through time and (often circumscribed) space, finding meaning in the everyday and incidental. At once an echo of Ivan Vladislavić’s award-winning Portrait with Keys and an original work of intense acuity and quiet power, The Near North is both intimate and expansive, ranging from small domestic dramas to great public spectacles. Wryly playful at times, fiercely serious at others, it is certain to move and delight all who accompany the writer through its pages.

The Global Manager's Guide to Living and Working Abroad

The Global Manager's Guide to Living and Working Abroad PDF Author: Mercer Human Res Consulting, Inc.
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313375917
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 323

Book Description
Living and working abroad. Sounds glamorous—and maybe it is, if you're posted to Hong Kong or Sydney. But what if your company sends you to Bangkok, Warsaw, or Manila? Many questions arise: Is it safe to go out at night? Do quality schools exist? How polluted is the air? Is public transportation handy? What's the average monthly rent for a decent house? What inoculations should you get before you go? Can you find your favorite brand of toothpaste? The Global Manager's Guide to Living and Working Abroad: Eastern Europe and Asia answers these and many other questions expats will have about the cities that companies send employees to most often in Eastern Europe and Asia, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Though the heart of the book is the city-by-city listing, it also includes tips on preparing for the move, dealing with culture shock, staying connected to the home front, understanding the psychological aspects of living abroad, country-specific business and social etiquette, and other topics of concern to workers sent abroad. The guide also includes information for corporate HR people: When a cost of living differential is appropriate and how to calculate it, how to obtain necessary work permits and visas, how to help employees stay as safe and secure as possible, and how to arrange for healthcare and insurance. Best of all, the information is up to date and comes right from the fresh research of Mercer—the consultancy many other companies turn to for advice and the latest facts regarding working and living conditions in all corners of the globe. That's why this book will help expatriate employees feel at home in cities far from their native land whether it's Seoul, Moscow, or Dubai.

Beyond Our Wildest Dreams

Beyond Our Wildest Dreams PDF Author: Ineke van Kessel
Publisher: University of Virginia Press
ISBN: 9780813918686
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
The 1980s in South Africa were marked by protest, violent confrontation, and international sanctions. Internally, the country saw a bewildering growth of grassroots organizations--including trade unions, civic associations in the black townships, student and other youth organizations, church-based groups, and women's movements--many of which operated under the umbrella of the United Democratic Front (UDF). "Beyond Our Wildest Dreams" explores the often conflicted relationship between the UDF's large-scale resistance to apartheid and its everyday struggles at the local level. In hindsight, the UDF can be seen as a transitional front, preparing the ground for leaders of the liberation movement to return from exile or prison and take over power. But the founding fathers of the UDF initially had far more modest ambitions. Interviews with Cachalia and other leading personalities in the UDF examine the organization's workings at the national level, while stories of ordinary people, collected by the author, illuminate the grassroots activism so important to the UDF's success. Even in South Africa, writes Ineke van Kessel, who covered the anti-apartheid movement as a journalist, resistance was not the obvious option for ordinary citizens. Van Kessel shows how these people were mobilized into forming a radical social movement that developed a highly flexible and innovative form of resistance that ultimately ended apartheid. --From publisher's description.
