Pages : 16

Book Description
'The Phoenix and the Turtle' is an allegorical poem about the death of ideal love by William Shakespeare. It is widely considered to be one of his most obscure works and has led to many conflicting interpretations. The poem describes a funeral arranged for the deceased Phoenix and Turtledove, respectively emblems of perfection and of devoted love. Some birds are invited, but others excluded. It goes on to state that the love of the birds created a perfect unity which transcended all logic and material fact. It concludes with a prayer for the dead lovers.

Music in Shakespearean Tragedy

Music in Shakespearean Tragedy PDF Author: Frederick William Sternfeld
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 9780415353274
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 392

Book Description
First published in 1963. When originally published this book was the first to treat at full length the contribution which music makes to Shakespeare's great tragedies, among them Hamlet, Othello, and King Lear. Here the playwright's practices are studied in conjunction with those of his contemporaries: Marlowe and Jonson, Marston and Chapman. From these comparative assessments there emerges the method that is peculiar to Shakespeare: the employment of song and instrumental music to a degree hitherto unknown, and their use as an integral part of the dramatic structure.

The Wind and the Rain

The Wind and the Rain PDF Author: Anthony Wilson
Publisher: Blue Diode Press
ISBN: 1915108136
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 74

Book Description
Anthony Wilson’s sixth collection, The Wind and the Rain, meets mortality and loss with humour, feeling and intelligence. Wilson combines a deceptively light touch with hard-earned palpable depth; candid, inventive, and never self-pitying. "Precise, cinematic, achingly tender poems for those of us who have loved and lost someone close. Like driving rain, this collection will take you to the raw place of grief and carry you to where joy breaks through." —Josephine Corcoran "Throughout The Wind and The Rain, Anthony Wilson walks the tightrope of simplicity. He peels off layers of language, paring it back to its core, searching for the means to express the intensity of grief. In his skilled hands, less becomes more." —Matthew Stewart

The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials. Innovative, authoritative and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has established itself as a leader in the field. The full anthology comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes. For those seeking an even more streamlined anthology than the two-volume Concise Edition, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature is now available in a compact single-volume version.
