Excerpt from The Wisconsin Archeologist, Vol. 17: December, 1918 Juneau County, in central Wisconsin, is a center in several aspects. Near the geographical center of the state it is also in the broad central valley of the Wisconsin and in that weird portion of the Driftless. Area where the castellated sandstone buttes stand like huge watch towers scattered over the flat sand plain. Its. Geologic features furnish very cogent explanation for its unusual richness in archaeological remains. Its area is within the 'broad belt of Potsdam sandstone that encircles the nucleus of crystalline rock that forms the Arch aean highlands of north Wisconsin. On the west and southwest the high plateau, the cut and jagged remnant of the old pene plain thrusts long fingers and dendritic cut tablelands out to ward the river valley while in the fresh peneplain that covers the north and east portions of the county the branches of the Wisconsin and their tributaries are cutting a new dendritic pattern in the level terrace. The erosion of hundreds, if not thousands, of feet of over lying rock beds has left some very significant traces on the present surface and had much to do with making the Indian paradise. The level sand terrace that fills the wide valley of the Wisconsin from the fringing overwash apron of the Kettle Moraine on the east to the jagged border of the old peneplain on the west marks the epoch of erosion when the Old channel of the Wisconsin was. Excerpt from Wisconsin The history of Wisconsin concerns itself with three political régimes those of New France, Great Britain, and the United States. Its civiliza tion, however, is of the first and third, for the influence of the second was negligible. When, in 1816, American troops first took possession of Green Bay and Prairie du Chien, the country between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River was still French to the core. Indeed, still another decade was to pass before the Americanizing process began to show results. These came, not by transforming the character or habits of our mild-mannered and non progressive habitans and voyageurs, who remained quite unchanged through full two centuries of resi dence in Wisconsin, but by means of the influx of New Yorkers and New Englanders, who gradually crowded them to the wall. It was nearly twenty years after American occupation began, before the fur-trade, now managed by Americans but almost wholly manned by French, ceased to be Wiscon sin's dominating industry. In his retirement his pen was not allowed to rust. And his articles on agriculture, written on his farm, had a wide circu lation. During his residence in North Dakota the Republican papers often used his'name as a candidate for Congress and for other places' of honor and trust. In 1892 he returned to Mil waukee. Excerpt from Collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Vol. 1 One of the manifestations of the general revival of interest in American history, so noticeable during the past fifteen or eighteen years, has been the large and ever-increasing demand for materials for the study of local and sectional history. In the case of this Society, the result has been an almost complete exhaustion of the stock of the first ten volumes of Wisconsin Historical Collections - indeed, it has been many years since any copies of some of its volumes could be supplied. The recent rapid increase in the number of public and school libraries throughout the State, and the marked improvement in the methods and strength of the older of these institutions, together with the greater attention now paid by the general public to the study of Western history, have appeared to necessitate the republishing of these early and rare volumes. The demand for their reprinting, from the teachers and librarians of the State, has of late been so persistent that the Legislature of 1903 made the necessary provisions therefor. They will accordingly be republished at the rate of two volumes a year. In considering the matter of a second edition, the first impulse was, by careful re-editing to bring the volumes up to date, both in the matter of eliminating the undesirable material and in correcting other matter concerning which there is now more complete information. In 1855, when volume i was issued, the study of Western history was in its infancy. The editor, Dr. Lyman Copoland Draper, was then new to the West, and there were few others who had made scholarly researches into its historical sources.
