An analytical solution is obtained for the perturbation velocity potential for transonic flow about lifting wing-body configurations with order-one span-length ratios and small reduced-span-length ratios and equivalent-thickness-length ratios. The analysis is performed with the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The angles of attack which are considered are small but are large enough to insure that the effects of lift in the region far from the configuration are either dominant or comparable with the effects of thickness. The modification to the equivalence rule which accounts for these lift effects is determined. An analysis of transonic flow about lifting wings with large aspect ratios is also presented.

Excerpt from Computation of the Transonic Flow About a Swept Wing in the Presence of an Engine Nacelle A principal goal of computational transonic aerodynamics is to develop computa tional methods for the analysis of transonic flows and for the design of efficient transonic air craft. We are interested in particular in the problem of designing wings with only weak shocks at a given Mach number and angle of attack. Methods, which we shall describe below, exist for the design of shockless transonic airfoils and for computing the transonic flow about a given wing. One approach to the design of a low drag transonic swept wing is to start with a shockiess airfoil in each wing section. Three-dimensional effects will cause shocks on such a wing, but we expect them not to be too severe. By small readjustments of the wing surface, which can be made by a code which treats the wing surface as a free boun dary, we can redesign the wing to reduce the strength of the shocks. Our method takes this program one step further. If an obstacle, such as an engine nacelle, is placed in the flow near an almost shockless wing, sizeable shocks can be expected to appear on the wing.
