Book Description
Willow Grove Park illustrates the fascinating history of one of America's most famous amusement parks. Willow Grove Park was built in 1896 as a way of encouraging people to ride the trolley on weekends. This ingenious concept proved a remarkable success, and the park set the standard for providing first-class entertainment and amusement. Here John Philip Sousa, Victor Herbert, and Arthur Pryorgave daily musical concerts, while various rides thrilled those seeking more rigorous fun. Through a wide range of images, Willow Grove Park captures the rich history of this well-known icon.

Hatboro

Hatboro PDF Author: Millbrook Society
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738503424
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
The Crooked Billet Inn, although no longer standing, remains one of the most recognizable and well-loved spots in Hatboro. It was there where one of Hatboro's founders, John Dawson, operated an inn and eatery, and where George Washington ate and slept during his pursuit of the British Army during the Revolutionary War. It is because of the popularity of the Crooked Billet Inn that Hatboro was often known simply as "The Billet." There is no confusing Hatboro for anywhere else, since it is the only town with that name in the United States. First settled in the early 1700s, Hatboro grew to become an industrial and educational giant. Hatboro includes, among many others, exceptional images of the former Loller Academy, which helped Hatboro become an educational center in an otherwise rural area. Also highlighted are the Brewster Aviation Company, and the equipment Brewster manufactured for the military during World War II. Of course, the Crooked Billet Inn and the Battle of Crooked Billet, Willow Grove Park, and the music of John Philip Sousa and Victor Herbert are revisited in these pages, as well as some lesser-known stories, like those of the horrors of having two competing phone companies, and the story of "Matilda."

Eastern Montgomery County Revisited

Eastern Montgomery County Revisited PDF Author: Andrew Mark Herman
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1439616280
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 132

Book Description
Montgomery County was incorporated in 1784, though much of the area was settled in the late 1600s and early 1700s through land grants by Pennsylvanias founder, William Penn. Located immediately northwest of Philadelphia, the Quaker city has always influenced the county. Wealthy mansions, religious institutions, colleges, and industry all have contributed to the fabric of the county. Eastern Montgomery County Revisited explores this scenic and historic area with rare postcards from 1905 to 1970 and is meant to be a companion to Eastern Montgomery County. Although this book visits many favorite and familiar parts of the county, great emphasis has been placed on smaller, lesser-known places that truly make this book intriguing and unique.
