Creating Colonial Williamsburg

Creating Colonial Williamsburg PDF Author: Anders Greenspan
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469625679
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
In Creating Colonial Williamsburg, Anders Greenspan examines the restoration and re-creation of the structures and gardens of Virginia's colonial capital beginning in 1926. The restoration was undertaken by the Rockefeller family, whose aim was to promote a twentieth-century appreciation for eighteenth-century ideals. Ironically, those ideals, including democracy, individualism, and representative government, were often promoted at the expense of a more complete understanding of the town's true history. The meaning and purpose of Colonial Williamsburg has changed over time, along with America's changing social and political landscapes, making the study of this historic site a unique and meaningful entry point to understanding the shifting modern American character. In recent years, financial struggles and declining attendance forced a new interpretation of the town, extending the presentation into the period of the American Revolution, while adding new interpretive approaches such as street theater and a greater emphasis on technology. Over its eighty-year history, says Greenspan, Colonial Williamsburg has grown and matured, while still retaining its emphasis on the importance of eighteenth-century values and their application in the modern world.

He traces the deterioration that followed when the capital moved to Richmond in 1780, and concludes with the exciting story of how Williamsburg's past was saved. Old photographs, daguerreotypes, watercolors, sketches, and maps capture "pre-restoration" Williamsburg. Lovely color "after" photographs show that the vision and dream have been fulfilled.

Book Description
Artist's Reference Photos: The Restored Colonial Area of the City of Williamsburg, VA If you love the restored colonial district of the City of Williamsburg, Virginia, and if you are an artist looking for strong reference photos, this book is for you! This book over 80 full-color photographs that provide strong visual interpretation of the exterior and interior of the governor's palace for the artists to use fully as a reference for their sketching, illustrations, and painting efforts. This book is made up of photographs taken between 2015 and 2018 by the author / photographer's efforts of documenting architecture in the restored colonial area within the City of Williamsburg, Virginia. During this period, the photos may actually show small differences between the years as the non-profit foundation updated, improved, and added to the beautiful tourist setting. After dozens of trips to the City of Williamsburg, Virginia over decades, and untold numbers of visits to the restored area of the original colonial city, the collection grew to thousands of photos. The difference between these photographs and other photography of the area is these were taken specifically at certain artistic angles and viewpoints that would aesthetically enhance the view of the building or allow the artist to see details of the exteriors or interiors. The photographer's main purpose was to use the photographs as a basis for sketches and drawings for fine art illustrations and pen and ink drawings. Thus the photographs in this book showcase angles and views which the normal tourist or photographer may not have considered. The photographer used a Canon Rebel DSL 35mm camera set on automatic exposure and focus. These photo resources are excellent guides which artists are allowed to use as a basis for their own fine art illustrations of the beautiful restored buildings, streets, and venues. This book is one of a series of artists reference photos by the photographer of the restored colonial area inside the city of Williamsburg, Virginia (check Amazon for other books in this series!). This book and the photographer allows and encourages the fine artist purchasing this book to use any reference photo as a basis upon which to create their own fine art illustrations. "This book, a companion to 'Colonial Williamsburg: The Guide: The Official Companion to the Historic Area,' recounts Williamsburg's 'story'--the events and circumstances that led to the town's founding and its community life and political importance up to and through the Revolutionary War. It offers a bit of postwar history as well, including Williamsburg's experience of the Civil War and the town's eventual restoration-all 301 acres of it.
