Book Description
The first folder consists of letters to Young from various businesses. Several are from his brother, Stephen Young (1766- ) in Scotland, who provided Young with books to sell in Philadelphia. In 1803 he sent to Young 73 pounds' worth of books and referred to the possibility of "a new war with France." Stephen also requested specific book titles to be sent to Scotland for sale. The letters from Scotland also include family news. Several contain invoices attached to the letters. In 1817 Stephen Young refers to U.S. duties on the importation of cudbear (dye from lichens). The first folder also includes a printed prospectus for the Christian Examiner, 1840, with a request to help find subscribers; a list of scholars in Jay, Penn., in 1826; and an order for 20 copies of the Life of President Tyler in 1844. One letter is a personal request to Lavinia Smith in Maine to write a poem to the memory of a young bride, Sarah Kimball. The second folder contains a handwritten library catalog of a physician, Dr. William R. Grant, and several pages prepared in the late nineteenth century by an unidentified person (possibly W. Muir) containing Young family genealogical and biographical information, as well as letter extracts from William Young's letterbook, with the possible aim of preparing a biography.
