ISBN: 074256942X
Category : Travel

Pages : 241

Book Description
Moving beyond the tequila-soaked clichés of Mexican tourism, this multifaceted book explores the influence and experiences of Americans in Mexico since World War II. The authors trace Mexico's growing role as an important refuge for Americans seeking not only sun and fun but an alternative cultural and social model. Delving into the rich and varied worlds of political exiles, students, art dealers, retiree/artist colonies, and tourist zones, this work illustrates why large numbers of Americans have been irresistibly drawn to Mexico. Specialists in literature, anthropology, history, and geography bring their unique perspectives to the stories of these migrants, offering a fascinating interpretation to all those interested in modern Mexican history, border studies, tourism, and retirement in Mexico.

William Walker's Wars

William Walker's Wars PDF Author: Scott Martelle
Publisher: Chicago Review Press
ISBN: 1613737327
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 235

Book Description
In the decade before the onset of the Civil War, groups of Americans engaged in a series of longshot—and illegal—forays into Mexico, Cuba, and other Central American countries in hopes of taking them over. These efforts became known as filibustering, and their goal was to seize territory to create new independent fiefdoms, which would ultimately be annexed by the still-growing United States. Most failed miserably. William Walker was the outlier. Short, slender, and soft-spoken with no military background—he trained as a doctor before becoming a lawyer and then a newspaper editor—Walker was an unlikely leader of rough-hewn men and adventurers. But in 1856 he managed to install himself as president of Nicaragua. Neighboring governments saw Walker as a risk to the region and worked together to drive him out—efforts aided, incongruously, by the United States' original tycoon, Cornelius Vanderbilt. William Walker's Wars is a story of greedy dreams and ambitions, the fate of nations and personal fortunes, and the dark side of Manifest Destiny, for among Walker's many goals was to build his own empire based on slavery. This little-remembered story from US history is a cautionary tale for all who dream of empire.

Travels and Researches in Native North America, 1882-1883

Travels and Researches in Native North America, 1882-1883 PDF Author: Herman Frederik Carel Kate
Publisher: UNM Press
ISBN: 9780826332813
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 436

Book Description
This important but little-known account of several southwestern tribes has heretofore been available only in the author's native Dutch. Ten Kate's studies of the Pima, Hopi, Apache, and Zuni people are especially noteworthy for their information on tribal cultures. He observed firsthand and sought out informants willing to elaborate on Indian games and sports and on social organization and myths of religious significance. He was particularly interested in the position of women and treatment of children and admired the natives' attitudes on these matters more than did other early anthropologists. His best material is from his extended stay at Zuni, where he and Frank Hamilton Cushing became lifelong friends. His observations on the impact of whites on Indian cultures constitute valuable documentation of the dilution of native life-styles. Although he is not as well known as contemporaries like Bandelier, Bourke, and Matthews, ten Kate's work remains influential in the field after more than 120 years.

Baja California Adventures

Baja California Adventures PDF Author: Froylan Tiscareño
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1483641937
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 507

Book Description
The stories featured in Baja California Adventures take place during a span of almost sixty years of travel in the rugged, parched, yet hauntingly attractive peninsula. The author kept detailed notes on most of his trips then fleshed out this skeleton in a narrative that places the reader in the role of participant in the adventure. Thus, one feels the bite of the 4WD tires into the desert sand, newly hard-packed by the moisture of a quick-moving thunderstorm. The author describes the excitement of finding Indian petroglyphs, arrowheads, or clay ollas in remote canyons. Because Mr. Tiscareo is also a pilot, many of the trips included here involve mention of the special immigration rules for private fly-in tourists. Finally, there are Baja adventures in the pine-clad granite fortress that is the Sierra de San Pedro Mrtir in the northern part of the peninsula. Here, the author joined other veteran Bajeos in hoof-and-boot or horse-assisted explorations. In short, this book should be inspiration to those readers who want to visit Baja California, particularly the less tourist-trod destinations. Armchair travelers will derive vicarious pleasure without the effort of going there themselves.
