Book Description
Excerpt from William Painter and His Father, Dr. Edward Painter: Sketches and Reminiscences In the production of this book I have obeyed the natural impulse to preserve accounts of two benefactors of the human race, inasmuch as they were my pro genitors. My father, William Painter, and his father, Dr. Edward Painter, were endowed with great energy, although I believe that their lives were unduly shortened by overwork. Father died in his sixty - eighth year, and grandfather in his sixty-third year. Memories of them are treasured by many, and many have passed on who clasped their hands. For those who cherish such recollections and for those who did not know them personally and desire to know more of their lives, this work is com piled. In the struggles of life of the present and ou-coming generations, the very near aspects which some, including myself, possess, may become dimmed or lost lest these steps be taken. In looking over old photographs which I have zealously cared for, I have found that many are fading. The original negatives of a number were destroyed in the fire of 1904, and it is thus apparent that these Visual representa tions of loved faces and closed chapters, as well as biographical matter concerning them, should be given over to the arts of the engraver and printer without delay. Lifting the lid

Lifting the lid PDF Author: Alessandro Zaltron
Publisher: Ronzani Editore
ISBN: 8887007497
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
Who invented the cork? And when? The answers to these and many other questions are revealed on a journey back through eight thousand years and the civilisations who have populated the western world. The ancestors of the cork (and caps, and stoppers, and lids!) were found hiding in the first Neolithic settlements in Iran and among the ruins of Cretan civilisations, in the markets in ancient Egypt and on Phoenician ships. In more recent times, when stoppers began to take on the shape we are familiar with, they were protected by the laws of the Venetian Republic, or preserved as relics in the ancient abbey in Hautvillers, where dom Pérignon was the first to stopper a champagne bottle with a cork. Today, lids are such a common everyday object that they have become almost invisible to our eyes, and yet they marked an evolution in the food and drink culture of mankind. In its most collectable ‘crown' version, the bottle cap is the emblem of our entire modern age, not only because it wiped out almost two thousand alternative patents for stoppers, but above all because it paved the way, good or bad, for the disposable era. This is the first (and so far only) book about the history of the most used object in the world.
