Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants PDF Author: Wardiman Djojonegoro
Publisher: Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia
ISBN: 6024812515
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 668

Book Description
ÒIÕm happy to have been a part of history, however small my role was.Ó The words of Wardiman Djojonegoro reveal Indonesian history the way only a man who worked alongside Ali Sadikin, B. J. Habibie and Soeharto can. The modest 85-year-old, a former education minister and current foundation chairman at the Habibie Center, recalls the younger days of a Òbig villageÓ Jakarta and says it was the countryÕs third president who taught him the keys to national development. This is what Peter Zack, a reporter for the Jakarta Globe, wrote on 18 April 2009. In the present English translation of his 2014 memoir, Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Reminiscences of Working with Three Great Indonesians, 1966Ð1998, Wardiman invites us to take a walk down memory lane and in so doing he tells us something about his life and career, as well as sharing his thoughts on a lifetime of public service under three great Indonesians. He also tells us about his secrets of how to age gracefully and his thoughts on the future of Indonesian education. The bookÕs core theme can be summed up in his reply to a high school student who asked him about the key to his lifetime success: ÒWherever you are placed, do your best!Ó

Photographic subjects

Photographic subjects PDF Author: Susie Protschky
Publisher: Manchester University Press
ISBN: 1526124394
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 313

Book Description
Photographic subjects examines photography at royal celebrations during the reign of Queens Wilhelmina (1898–1948) and Juliana (1948–80), a period spanning the zenith and fall of Dutch rule in Indonesia. It is the first monograph in English on the Dutch monarchy and the Netherlands’ modern empire in the age of mass and amateur photography. Photographs forged imperial networks, negotiated relations of recognition and subjecthood between Indonesians and Dutch authorities, and informed cultural modes of citizenship at a time of accelerated colonial expansion and major social change in the East Indies/Indonesia. This book advances methods in the uses of photographs for social and cultural history, reveals the entanglement of Dutch and Indonesian histories in the twentieth century, and provides a new interpretation of Queens Wilhelmina and Juliana as imperial monarchs.

Bali and the Tourist Industry

Bali and the Tourist Industry PDF Author: David Shavit
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476610967
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
The island of Bali's sensational image was created by the tourists, artists, and scholars who visited the tiny nation between the two world wars. A Dutch colony from 1908, Bali was a source of revenue for the Dutch government, which began to develop its image as the ultimate vacation spot. The tourism industry spread the idea of Bali as a paradise in which noble, happy, spiritual Balinese--all prodigiously creative artists--lived in innocence. Sensual images of beautiful people on an enchanted isle unspoiled by modernity predominated. Bali also acquired a reputation as a homosexual paradise. A host of books and articles fed these images of Bali until it evolved into one of the most romantic stops on the tourist itinerary. The Balinese people, however, made little profit from the tourist traffic. This history of the development of tourism in Bali stretches from the Dutch occupation in 1906 to the Japanese occupation in 1942. After exhaustive research in published records and in unpublished letters, diaries, and oral histories left by many of the American and European visitors to the island as well as the Balinese residents, the author explores the reasons for Bali's popularity among Westerners and their effects on the native culture.
