Book Description
Excerpt from Wilkie Collins: A Biography The boy grew up in this respectable middle-class environ ment surrounded by works of art, and delighted his father by starting to paint at an early age. The elder Collins did all he could to foster his son's obvious talent, instructing him in draughtsmanship and the use of paint, taking him on sketching expeditions to some nearby village such as High gate or Willesden, and occasionally sending him to spend the day with his great friend, George Morland. Though deeply shocked by his dissipated habits, the boy was able to learn something of 'morland's masterly technique. AS soon as he was eligible he became a student at the Royal Academy where, at the age of eighteen, he was also an exhibitor.
