Book Description
'A triumph' The TLS 'This special and magical book has changed the way I see the world' Dan Saladino 'Inspiration and delight sparkle from every page ... This book [is] a revelation of joy to the general reader for whom wild food is another country' John Wright, author of the River Cottage handbooks A captivating and lyrical journey into our ancestral past, through what and how we eat. Mo Wilde made a quiet but radical pledge: to live only off free, foraged food for an entire year. In a world disconnected from its roots, eating wild food is both culinary and healing, social and political. Ultimately, it is an act of love and community. Using her expert knowledge of botany and mycology, Mo follows the seasons to find nutritious food from hundreds of species of plants, fungi and seaweeds, and in the process learns not just how to survive, but how to thrive. Nourishing her body and mind deepens her connection with the earth - a connection that we have become estranged from but which we all, deep down, hunger for. This hunger is about much more than food. It is about accepting and understanding our place in a natural network that is both staggeringly complex and beautifully simple. THE WILDERNESS CURE is a diary of a wild experiment; a timely and inspiring memoir which explores a deeper relationship between humans and nature, and reminds us of the important lost lessons from our past.

Not illustrated. 1881 edition. Excerpt: ... chiefly upon his own experience. If others, like him, should regard it as desirable to search out a private boarding-place, it will be by no means difficult to accomplish that end. Along the main road, between Bloomingdale and St. Regis Lake, are scattered numerous farm-houses, in almost any one of which comfortable accommodation could probably be had. The village of Bloomingdale itself contains a good-sized inn and several dwellings of more pretentious appearance than those on the road. There are two or three stores in the place, a telegraph station, post-office, public school, and church. Certain advantages are gained if one prefers the seclusion of a private house by living on the stage road, although pleasant quarters can, no doubt, be found in many of the more remote houses. If the means of recreation through the winter months are limited, they may still serve to prevent the time / from hanging heavily on the invalid's Lands. In the bright, clear, sunshiny days--and a good many of these may be counted upon in the course of the season--it will be the first duty of the patient to keep as much out of doors as is practicable. If his strength justifies him in taking moderate bodily exercise, he may walk over the roads with a scene before his eyes grander than was ever yet put on canvas; or he may strike across lots through the woods on a pair of snow-shoes, which barbarous contrivances are here indicative of civilization; or he may hunt rabbits; and if he knows how to use his gun, he may be sure of plenty of this lively game. Should he be still too weak to safely indulge in these more violent exercises, he may ride out instead, and thereby secure to himself the benefit of the bracing air'without the slightest fear of taking cold. The Wilderness First Aid Handbook

The Wilderness First Aid Handbook PDF Author: Grant S. Lipman
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1626365377
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 119

Book Description
The Wilderness First Aid Handbook is a handy, quick-reference guide easily accessible with basic wilderness first aid knowledge, but it does not require advanced degrees or experience with medicine and prehospital care. Recognizing that certain knowledge and procedures are outside the scope of a layperson’s training, Dr. Grant Lipman limits the use of technical terms and advanced techniques that may be unfamiliar to some readers or beyond their comfort zone. This system-based, easy-to-follow guide assists the first aid provider when encountering most wilderness emergencies, from cold and heat concerns and blister treatments to high altitude illness and lightning injury prevention—and much more. Typically the most challenging decision in the wilderness environment is when to evacuate a sick or potentially sick person, and as such, each section has detailed decision-making steps to inform you of when to be concerned and when to get out. This guidance is based upon the recent evidence-based consensus statement published by the Wilderness Medical Society on the scope of practice of wilderness first aid. Filled with original, full-color artwork illustrating the techniques and procedures described and with internal-spiral binding and waterproof pages handy for travel into extreme environments, The Wilderness First Aid Handbook is a must-have for every back pocket or backpack.

Adirondack Wilderness

Adirondack Wilderness PDF Author: Jane Eblen Keller
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 9780815601500
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
Greater in area than Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Olympic, Yellowstone, and Glacier national parks combined, New York State's Adirondack Park is the largest public park in the nation. A land of contrasts and paradoxes, loved, feared, exploited, protected, argued over, eulogized, and affected for better or worse by the hand of man for more than 300 years, the Adirondack forests, rivers, lakes, and peaks attract nearly 9 million visitors a year. From the geologic origins and glacial scouring of the region, to Indians, early settlers, and the logging, mining, and tourist industries, Jane Eblen Keller unfolds the dramatic history of the Adirondacks and the men and women who tried to tame the wilderness. The author also recounts how man and nature have interacted with each other in the region, indeed, how our American attitude toward nature shaped Adirondack history. This is a highly readable and amusing introduction to both Adirondack and conservation literature.
