Book Description
"So you are suggesting, what? That men do not tailgate?" an observer asked. "No. He's not suggesting any such thing," another observer interjected. "But let's be clear, at least in my opinion, tailgating is failing to have an assured clear stopping distance from the vehicle in front of you." Another observer, a woman, stated that she almost always tailgates in late evenings because it is dark and is often the only one of only two or three vehicles on that dark, lonely roadway. For her it is about a real need to tailgate, to be close. So why do women tailgate? The simple reason for their tailgating behavior is that they are selfish. The not-so-simple reason for their tailgating behavior is that they are egoistic. The tailgater's desire flowing from her volitional behavior is egoistic if, and only if, it is something that interests her because it is important or affects her and it reasonably benefits her to the exclusion of everyone else. However, the philosopher Spinoza suggested that ethical egoism is a behavior in which everyone ought to seek their own advantage. Why do women tailgate? The philosopher Epicurus suggested that ethics is a form of egoistic hedonism, in that the only thing that is intrinsically valuable is one's own pleasure; anything else that has value is valuable merely to securing pleasure for oneself. Another observer said, "Perhaps, because something within her is sending bad or confusing signals. I am suggesting that those tailgating drivers may be getting mixed or confusing cellular signals. That is, in relation to their extracellular matrix, which is a collection of sugars, proteins, as well as other molecules, which is a place where signals affecting cell progression and mental process resurge."

Female Fans of the NFL
Author: Anne Cunningham Osborne
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317663780
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 262
Book Description
In the past, sport, particularly football, has been defined as a male domain. Women’s interest stereotypically ranges from gentle tolerance to active resistance. But increasingly, women are proudly identifying themselves as supporters of their teams, and have become highly desirable audiences for sport organizations and merchandisers. Football provides a unique site at which to examine the complex interplay between three theoretical areas: identity formation and maintenance, commercialization of cultural practices, and gender hegemony. This book explores how women experience their fandom, and what barriers exist for the female fan.

Gridiron Gourmet
Author: Maria J. Veri
Publisher: University of Arkansas Press
ISBN: 1682261018
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
On football weekends in the United States, thousands of fans gather in the parking lots outside of stadiums, where they park their trucks, let down the gates, and begin a pregame ritual of drinking and grilling. Tailgating, which began in the early 1900s as a quaint picnic lunch outside of the stadium, has evolved into a massive public social event with complex menus, extravagant creative fare, and state-of-art grilling equipment. Unlike traditional notions of the home kitchen, the blacktop is a highly masculine culinary environment in which men and the food they cook are often the star attractions. Gridiron Gourmet examines tailgating as shown in television, film, advertising, and cookbooks, and takes a close look at the experiences of those tailgaters who are as serious about their brisket as they are about cheering on their favorite team, demonstrating how and why the gendered performances on the football field are often matched by the intensity of the masculine displays in front of grills, smokers, and deep fryers.

The Tailgate

Publisher: Little, Brown
ISBN: 0316376167
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 41
Book Description
A stirring portrait of a relationship at a crossroads, this digital original short story follows two irresistible young lovers as they cope with college life, and invites us into a world we don't want to leave. Clendenin Hughes first kissed Dabney Kimball during a Nantucket snowstorm freshman year of high school. Ever since that moment - God, the rush, the chemistry! - Dabney has known that she and Clen are an unsplittable unit - essentially the same person in two different bodies. Of course, with Dabney now at Harvard and Clen at Yale, those bodies are 140 miles apart. And traveling is a serious challenge for Dabney, for reasons she'd prefer not to discuss, reasons having to do with her mother (or lack thereof). But with the big Harvard-Yale game coming up, Dabney is determined to make the trek to New Haven to see Clen. She's even borrowed a sexy black outfit from a classmate down the hall. But when she arrives at the tailgate to see sparks flying between Clen and Jocelyn, a girl with dark blue eyes and luscious black hair, Dabney fears the collapse of a bond she has never questioned before, a bond so important that she'll be lost without it. To learn the fates of Dabney and Clen, read Elin Hilderbrand's novel, The Matchmaker.
