Book Description
Excerpt from Who's Who in the World, 1912: A Biographical Dictionary of the World's Notable Living Men and Women N this maxim of the poet lies the incentive for this work. The idea is the development of a remark made by one of the most prominent librarians of the world, to the efiect that there existed a great demand for a who's who of an international character. For nearly a century past various attempts have been made by reputable publishers to produce an adequate biographical dictionary, but however laudable and useful have been the productions, until the advent of Tan international who's who, they have all been marked with the grave defect of provincialism. The educated Frenchman has little use for a Who's Who in France, for, being a reader of the daily press, he is fairly well acquainted with the living celebrities of the Republic. What he wants to know is Who is Who in England, America, Australia, and other places. The same may be said of the intelligent public of other lands. To supply this information the only Who's Who worth considering must necessarily be international in character. The demand for a standard biographical dictionary such as the lxraasarloxax. Who's who has proven itself to be, has been increasing with the closer contact between men and women of all lands through modern travel, invention and journalism. Geographical miles no longer limit the acquaintance of man with man 's achievements; and the man or woman who reaches distinction in any branch of endeavor, becomes a citizen of the world, with whom it is not only a privilege but, an honor to become ao quainted. There are no local boundaries to mental or moral greatness; therefore, we honor genius or goodness, whether it is developed in Siberia or Chicago. Who's Who in World War I

Who's Who in World War I PDF Author: John Bourne
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113476751X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 661

Book Description
Featuring over 1,000 alphabetically arranged, biographical entries, Who's Who in World War One builds up a complete and vivid picture of the major figures of the Great War. The subjects are drawn not only from the political and military spheres of all thirty-two nations involved, but also from the social and cultural life of the period. This book's breadth of coverage makes it the definitive biographical guide to the First World War; * from the British air ace, Albert Ball, to the German foreign secretary, Richard von Kuhlmann * from David Lloyd George to Rasputin * from the British war poet Siegfried Sassoon to the Serbian assassin Trifko Grabez and the Emperor Wilhelm II. Each entry provides biographical data and basic factual information about its subject's role in the Great War, and in the case of major figures there is also an assessment of their reputation in the light of current scholarship. Maps, cross-referencing, a list of military ranks, a guide to further reading and a thorough introduction complete what is at once a comprehensive work of reference and a fascinating overview of a crucial period in twentieth century history.
