Book Description
A charming memoir by Yuki Yoshida, wife of Shigeru Yoshida, the then Japanese Ambassador to the Court of St James (who later became Japan’s post-war prime minister of national reconstruction). It covers the years 1936/37 and includes fascinating observations on diplomatic life, and the round of receptions in London at the time, visits to the English countryside, friendship with Mrs Neville Chamberlain, visits to Scotland, as well as the Coronation of King George VI. Of particular interest are the author's reminiscences of the visit to UK of Prince and Princess Chichibu. This is a fascinating personal record of times past, interwoven with a number of revealing tanka poems that highlight the author's literary skill and deep emotions. This memoir is enhanced by the historical setting of the period provided by Professor Ian Nish, as well as the pen-portrait of Yuki Yoshida by Dorothy Britton (Lady Bouchier), and the many photographs provided by the Yoshida family.

Author: KarenE. Brown
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351536400
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
An exploration of women?s contributions to visual culture in major urban centres between the wars (1918-1939), this collection sheds new light on women?s relationships with the processes of modernism and modernization. Women?s work in a variety of mediums is explored, including design, print, illustration, murals, poster art, and costume design, as well as more conventional forms of painting and sculpture. International in scope, the volume discusses artists and exhibitions from the United Kingdom, Greece, Mexico, France, Ireland and the United States. The contributors place a strong emphasis on archival research yet each addresses contemporary concerns in feminist art history. By focusing on a very specific time period, the essays place a central concern on the history and theory of art and gender and are united by their coherent focus on women?s role in the agency and mediation of artistic production in the interwar period.

Book Description
Commissioned by the Japan Society as the companion volume to British Envoys in Japan, 1959-1972 (2004), this collection of essays on a century of official Japanese representation in the United Kingdom completes the history of bilateral diplomatic relations up to the mid-1960s, concluding with Ambassador Ohno Katsumi’s highly successful six-year assignment in 1964. In all, twelve authors, half of whom are Japanese , contribute to the work. In addition to the nineteen biographies, there are essays on the history of the Japanese Embassy buildings in London, an overview of Japanese envoys in Britain between 1862 and 1872 by Sir Hugh Cortazzi, as well as aspects of embassy life which illuminate some of the factors impacting on the life-style of residents in London in former times, including an entertaining personal memoir by Ayako Ishizaka of ‘A Diplomat’s Daughter in the 1930s’. By way of appendix, the volume concludes with a short history of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Gaimusho) up to the present day.
