Excerpt from Slavery and the War The reconstruction Of the Union on the basis of slavery is the real aim of the chiefs of the Southern Rebellion, which reconstruction would give them a government similar in its essential features to that of an cient pagan Rome, and a government, if the States held. Together, prepared for future conquest. Ethe Union reconstructed, it could pro ceed to the conquest of Mexico and Central America, and reduce their negro and colored populations to slavery, which would be counted their Americanization. This done, it could proceed, beginning with Cuba, to the annexation, one after another, of the West India Islands. It then could extend its power Over the whole continent of South America, and threaten an advance upon Eastern Asia, and the annexation of all the cotton-producing countries and tropical regions Of the globe, and through the monopoly of cotton, rice, and tropical productions in general, to Obtain the control of the commerce and credit of all nations. Such, to a greater or less extent, is the dream which Southern statesmen have indulged, and which they have taken the first step toward realizing. In its full extent no sane man supposes the dream practicable; but its practicability, up to a certain point, has been demonstrated by the suc cess which has hitherto attended the Rebellion, for, up to the present, successful it undeniably has been. The Confederates have brought into the field a more effective, if not a larger force, than the Federal govern ment has thus far brought against them and, from the Potomac to the Mississippi, they hold the strategic lines, and can be met by the Federal forces only at great disadvantage. Excerpt from Remarks Upon a Plan for the Total Abolition of Slavery in the United States It cannot be, in this enlightened age, that the slave can be kept ignorant of the sublime theory of liberty, when missionaries and other free agents are preaching and emblazoning to them all its poetical beauties, and attractions, under a pretence of religious duty; but which is, by the bye, a most cruel, mistaken, and ill timed charity, in their present vassalage. It only serves to embit ter their feelings, adding to their unhappiness, by making them discontented and rebellious, without furnishing any adequate relief. It cannot be possible, according to the immutable principles of human nature, when those fettered beings understand their natural rights, that they can be kept submissive and tranquil, in slavery. Most conclusive and melancholy proofs of this fact may be found in the late insurrections. They have dreadfully signalized their vengeance with conflagration, bloodshed and murder. In their slaughter, whole families have been massacred, even to infant children. This horrid fatality is only a prelude to the gathering of a more tremendous storm, threatening to burst forth with desolating fury. This frightful aspect may be the more fearfully dreaded, from the existing state of that miserable race, composing as they do, so large and formidable a portion of the population of the southern states. It is idle and hopeless for the slave holders ever again to rest in peace and contentment, until slavery is abolished. Let it be asked, what provokes the slave to such shocking deeds Is he fighting for that liberty which is an inheritance he received from the Creator? Is be struggling to break asunder those chains put upon him by the crafty devices of a more intelligent being? The essentials of his existence, of his character and life, of his end and destiny, are found in his breast, mysteri ously clustered and associated, blended and yet distinct. A few elementary faculties, or organs, constitute the whole of this delicate, symmetrical, wonderful fabric. This endow ment is sacred, temporarily lent to earth, to be improved and employed for lofty purposes and winged for immor tality; in the meanwhile, it is held in sure custody and familiar supervision by its creator, to disenthral it from every disability, and to secure its everlasting escape from the bondage of corruption and mortality. Man is such a creature, that without these features of mind or spirit, or with them paralyzed and debased by neglect, vitiated by abuse or perverted by false lights, he sinks to a level with the brutes; but with appropriate and efficient culture and refinement, he mounts upward as on eagles' wings, and vies with angels. There can be no doubt that the Creator designed and ex pected to receive richer tributes of praise and glory from the world of mind, intermingling unseen with the material creation, than from all the other stupendous productions of his six days' work.
