The two reformations in the 16th century

The two reformations in the 16th century PDF Author: H.A.Enno Gelder
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9401195625
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 412

Book Description
This book deals with the religious aspects and consequences of the Renaissance and Humanism. It is therefore advisable that these terms should first be defined to some extent. By Re naissance is meant here the new element in Western European culture, which became more and more evident in Italy during the I5th century and in about I500 completely dominated the great minds in that country. In the I6th century this new ele ment was carried to the countries on the other side of the Alps, where it developed vigorously during that century. The new element in that culture is found in the plastic arts, literature, philosophy and also - and this is the subject of the present study - in a modified religious attitude. The following chapters will show the content of this last change. Problems such as: what in general characterizes the Renaissance, by what was it caused, when did it begin and, in particular, whether the Re naissance forms a sharp contrast to the Middle Ages or whether it is a direct continuation of it, will not be discussed here. It will be clear from the above definition that I have placed first and foremost those things in the Renaissance which distinguish it from the Middle Ages.

The Unborn

The Unborn PDF Author: Jonathan Caleb Ruiz

Category : Fiction

Pages : 41

Book Description
I stand over a grave that I once cried over when I was small. The name reads, “Megan Anderson”. She is the woman who raised me before her death. After she died, my whole world crashed around me when the demon in me woke up. I’m a broken warrior who is trying to overcome the evil in me. I must be stronger for my sake and for my loved ones. The woman who raised me said these words to me once, “Become someone stronger who even the demons would fear”. Those words have been buried deep in my heart and mind. I want to escape, but the darkness follows me wherever I go. The only comfort I have is killing the cruel and evil people of this world. And then there’s my everything, the woman who loves me, who sacrificed everything to save me and to be by my side forever. I must accept the darkness and become the devil itself. I must save the good and kind people of this world. I had people close to me who supported my struggles, family who always made me feel stronger when I’m scared or when I get lonely. These people have always known what has lived in me for the past six-teen years. They don’t see me as a blood thirsty demon, ghoul, or evil person, but as a normal human who has a kind, noble, good personality and heart.

We Want What's Ours

We Want What's Ours PDF Author: Bernadette Atuahene
Publisher:
ISBN: 0198714637
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 207

Book Description
Millions of people all over the world have been displaced from their homes and property. Dispossessed individuals and communities often lose more than the physical structures they live in and their material belongings, they are also denied their dignity. These are dignity takings, and land dispossessions occurring in South Africa during colonialism and apartheid are quintessential examples. There have been numerous examples of dignity takings throughout the world, but South Africa stands apart because of its unique remedial efforts. The nation has attempted to move beyond the more common step of providing reparations (compensation for physical losses) to instead facilitating dignity restoration, which is a comprehensive remedy that seeks to restore property while also confronting the underlying dehumanization, infantilization, and political exclusion that enabled the injustice. Dignity restoration is the fusion of reparations with restorative justice. In We Want What's Ours, Bernadette Atuahenes detailed research and interviews with over one hundred and fifty South Africans who participated in the nations land restitution program provide a snapshot of South Africas successes and failures in achieving dignity restoration. We Want What's Ours is globally relevant because dignity takings have happened all around the world and throughout history: the Nazi confiscation of property from Jews during World War II; the Hutu taking of property from Tutsis during the Rwandan genocide; the widespread commandeering of native peoples property across the globe; and Saddam Husseins seizing of property from the Kurds and others in Iraq are but a few examples. When people are deprived of their property and dignity in years to come, the lessons learned in South Africa can help governments, policy makers, scholars, and international institutions make the transition from reparations to the more robust project of dignity restoration.

Mao

Mao PDF Author: Philip Short
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1786730154
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 864

Book Description
One of the great figures of the twentieth century, Chairman Mao looms irrepressibly over the economic rise of China. Mao Zedong was the leader of a revolution, a communist who lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty, an aggressive and distrustful leader, and a man responsible for more civilian deaths than perhaps any other historical figure. Now, four decades after Mao's death, acclaimed biographer Philip Short presents a fully updated and revised edition of his ground-breaking and masterly biography. Vivid, uncompromising and unflinching, Short presents in one-volume the man behind the propaganda - his family, his beliefs and his horrors. In doing so he shows us both the human being Mao was, and the monster he became.
