Book Description
Riaz Mohammed was born into a Muslim family in Pakistan. While a boy in the village of Gujarat, he witnessed a young boy chasing cattle into a fast-flowing stream. The boy was pulled from the water, but there was nothing that could be done for him—and he died. It was then that the author decided to be a doctor, so he could help people. Eventually, the author and his family immigrated to Scotland. There, he was treated unkindly, but he was determined to navigate his way through life. At age sixteen, he saw a vision of Jesus Christ while at camp. He converted to Christianity, which only made his life more complicated, but he studied hard and became a surgeon. He had started a family of his own and was at the top of his career when he contracted Hepatitis B—and he had to start over again in an entirely new way. Through it all, God worked in miraculous ways to never let him down.

What's up Doc?
Author: Dr. David P. Kalin M.D. M.P.H.
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1462820867
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 110
Book Description
WHATS UP, DOC? is a series of essays in which DR. DAVID P. KALIN, M.D., M.P.H., answers common questions asked of him with regard to health and medicine during his many years as a family physician. Illustrations combined with these essays extend a broader sense of appreciation not only to the doctor and his relationship with the patient but also of the doctors own creative effort and striving for as sense of balance and expression in life. August 21, 2004 Book Review - Stephen Z. Smith, M.D. WHATS UP, DOC? David P. Kalin, M.D., M.P.H. The Healthplace, P.O. Box 6009, Palm Harbor, FL 34684 ISBN: 1-4010-8801-5 Order: Xlibris Corporation, 1-888-795-4274, www.Xlibris.com, [email protected] An unusual book with an uncommon style, this tight little work of 100 or so pages should be consumed by the medically nave. With thirteen small chapters lighted with frequent bold printing, hand drawn sketches and pithy one liners, this reading favors the quick learn rather than the plodder. Offered as a conversation rather than a lecture, this information has the qualities of attachment and relevance rather than being pedantic. Some questions could be anticipated such as cholesterol numbers, vasectomy side effects, STDs and the like. Other chapters are more sensational in title, like Whats With Those Chinese Balls? Yet these headliners really belie very useful if not folksy descriptions. Probably few physicians will read this without some prodding, but this report stands as one physician telling others to read and remember that direct language registers with patients. Not all of us are comfortable with this brotherly relating to patients, but learning some holistic and other non traditional medicine should be helpful. For a modest price and easy wording, this book can be accepted as worthy for patient consumption.

Culture, Health and Sexuality
Author: Peter Aggleton
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317743954
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 384
Book Description
The last twenty years have seen a growth in multi-disciplinary work in the area of sexuality, culture and health. What was once a set of specialist concerns has been steadily mainstreamed. Alongside this, a broader interest has developed in ‘social’ and 'cultural’ factors relating to sexuality and sexual health, from family planning and STI management to gender and intimate partner violence and the technologisation of sex. This book offers a research-based overview of key topics relevant to social and cultural perspectives on sexuality and sexual health. Beginning with an extended introduction and divided into six sections, it looks at culture, sex and gender, sexual diversity, sex work, migration and sexual violence. Each section opens with an editorial discussion which places the theme, and the chapters that follow, in a contemporary context. Six additional substantive chapters can be accessed online at www.routledge.com/cw/aggleton. Including cutting-edge conceptual and empirical material from around the world, this is a key resource for students in, and across, a variety of academic disciplines in the social and health sciences. It is especially suitable for readers from sexuality studies, gender studies, development studies, anthropology and sociology as well as those with public health and social work backgrounds.

The Sky Was Falling
Author: Cornelia Griggs
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1982168501
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 304
Book Description
NATIONAL BESTSELLER The dramatic, unforgettable, and ultimately cathartic diary of a young pediatric surgeon and mother working on the front lines as the COVID-19 pandemic hit one of New York City’s busiest hospitals. In the spring of 2020, many of us were sequestered in our homes, attempting to teach our children and learn to bake while the pings of news alerts and wails of sirens reminded us of the devastation outside. Dr. Cornelia Griggs’s experience was nothing like ours. A pediatric surgery fellow in New York City, Griggs was entering the final victory lap at the end of nine grueling years of training. She was set for a big graduation celebration and looking forward to spending some real time with her husband and two toddlers. When COVID-19 arrived, Griggs initially encouraged her friends and family not to panic. But as mysterious cases began showing up in the hospital, and then hospital supplies started disappearing from shelves, she couldn’t hold back the feeling that this was going to be worse than she had thought. Out of frustration and fear, she penned a startling op-ed in The New York Times that went, for lack of a better word, viral. The piece was read by over a million people, and Griggs appeared on CNN. Now, she is completing her story. The Sky Was Falling is her day-by-day account of the staggering case numbers, dwindling respirator supply, and lack of clarity on how to treat this new disease. Harrowing and deeply personal, it reads like an all-too-real white-knuckle thriller and describes how healthcare professionals went beyond what they thought they were capable of to heal their patients, and themselves.
