What's My Name in Hawaii?

What's My Name in Hawaii? PDF Author: Louise Bonner
Publisher: Tuttle Publishing
ISBN: 1462912885
Category : Juvenile Fiction

Pages : 60

Book Description
What's My Name in Hawaii? is a multicultural children's story of a little Japanese boy's search for a name. He needs a new one because he is about to become an American citizen in Hawaii, where his parents have come to live from faraway Japan. When Toshio Takahashi first goes to school he does not want to play with the other children. Like most beginners, he cries because he misses his mother and mostly because he does not speak or understand English. Language, however, proves no barrier in a child's world and soon Toshio is just another flower in the school called Na Lei o Ka Keiki, "a lei of children". When Toshio's citizenship day approaches, all of his young schoolmates wish to help him select an American name like theirs, to add to those reflecting their various racial backgrounds. Susan Iwalani Au suggests "John" and Lisa Ilima Santiago offers "Gaylord" because she has an uncle by that name. The final choice is a happy one for all most of all, to Toshio whose new name now reveals that he was born in Japan, but is an American citizen living in Hawaii, the 50th State of America.

What's My Name, Fool?

What's My Name, Fool? PDF Author: Dave Zirin

Book Description
"Zirin is America's best sportswriter."--Lee Ballinger, Rock and Rap Confidential "Zirin is one of the brightest, most audacious voices I can remember on the sportswriting scene, and my memory goes back to the 1920s."--Lester Rodney, N.Y. Daily Worker sports editor, 1936-1958 "Zirin has an amazing talent for covering the sports and politics beat. Ranging like a great shortstop, he scoops up everything! He profiles the courageous and inspiring athletes who are standing up for peace and civil liberties in this repressive age. A must read!"--Matthew Rothschild, The Progressive "This is cutting-edge analysis delivered with wit and compassion."--Mike Marqusee, author, Redemption Song: Muhammad Ali and the Spirit of the Sixties Here Edgeofsports.com sportswriter Dave Zirin shows how sports express the worst, as well as the most creative and exciting, features of American society. Zirin explores how Janet Jackson's Super Bowl flash-time show exposed more than a breast, why the labor movement has everything to learn from sports unions and why a new generation of athletes is no longer content to "play one game at a time" and is starting to get political. What's My Name, Fool! draws on original interviews with former heavyweight champ George Foreman, Olympian and black power saluter John Carlos, NBA basketball player and anti-death penalty activist Etan Thomas, antiwar women's college hoopster Toni Smith, Olympic Project for Human Rights leader Lee Evans and many others. Popular sportswriter and commentator Dave Zirin is editor of The Prince George's Post (Maryland) and writes the weekly column "Edge of Sports" (edgeofsports.com). He is a senior writer at basketball.com. Zirin's writing has also appeared in The Source, Common Dreams, College Sporting News, CounterPunch, Alternet, International Socialist Review, Black Sports Network, War Times, San Francisco Bay View and Z Magazine.

The Mute Eunuch and Other Tales from Mars

The Mute Eunuch and Other Tales from Mars PDF Author: Roy J. Challis
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1664134174
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 123

Book Description
Most of this material was written by the author during the sixties to roaring nineties. Some of the attitudes presented may have been influenced by John Gray’s Men Are from Mars Women Are from Venus. The material was collected, rewritten, and collated during the period 2011–2020. The enterprise of collecting the material was prolonged by a stint on the Saskatchewan School Boards Association board of directors, including several years as the Urban Public representative and three years as president of the association. The major stumbling block was a series of life-threatening health conditions. Most of them were complications from a long battle with an early onset of type 2 diabetes. The collection is a miscellany of contradictions from gentle family material to adult situations galore. Adultery, stalking, and men who can’t keep their johnson in their pants meet women who welcome their advances and many who don’t. It’s all meant to be good fun. Life is more worth living if we don’t take ourselves or anybody else too seriously. Some of us have too many Neanderthal genes and others don’t have enough. Classifying ourselves is so last century. Welcome to the world of Homo sapiens. The human race, better than a marathon, and everyone is a winner.

The Tiny Mansion

The Tiny Mansion PDF Author: Keir Graff
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1984813862
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
In this pitch-perfect middle grade adventure, twelve-year-old Dagmar must endure a summer living off-the-grid with her family in a tiny home. The last thing Dagmar wants is to spend her summer vacation squished into a tiny house with her dad, her stepmom, and her annoying five-year-old half brother. But after a sudden financial setback, her family is evicted from their Oakland apartment, and that's just where they end up, parked among the towering redwoods of Northern California. As Dagmar explores the forest around their new and (hopefully) temporary home, she discovers they are living next door to an eccentric tech billionaire and his very unusual extended family. There's his brother, a woodsman who sets dangerous booby traps all over the place, and his sister, a New Age animal lover who meditates to whale songs in an isolation tank. And then there's the billionaire's son, Blake, who has everything he could ever wish for--except maybe a friend. But when a wildfire engulfs the forest, everyone--rich and poor, kid and adult--will have to work together to escape. And with both families at risk of losing everything, it turns out it's not the size of the home but the people you share it with that matters.
