Book Description
Class explains much in the differentiation of life chances and political dynamics in South Asia; scholarship from the region contributed much to class analysis. Yet class has lost its previous centrality as a way of understanding the world and how it changes. This outcome is puzzling; new configurations of global economic forces and policy have widened gaps between classes and across sectors and regions, altered people’s relations to production, and produced new state-citizen relations. Does market triumphalism or increased salience of identity politics render class irrelevant? Has rapid growth in aggregate wealth obviated long-standing questions of inequality and poverty? Explanations for what happened to class vary, from intellectual fads to global transformations of interests. The authors ask what is lost in the move away from class, and what South Asian experiences tell us about the limits of class analysis. Empirical chapters examine formal and informal-sector labor, social movements against genetic engineering, and politics of the "new middle class." A unifying analytical concern is specifying conditions under which interests of those disadvantaged by class systems are immobilized, diffused, coopted -- or autonomously recognized and acted upon politically: the problematic transition of classes in themselves to classes for themselves.

Whatever Happened to Miss Herbermen's Class? “–Your class? She must be insane in her brain.” Miss Herbermen, Wendy St. John’s teacher, decided to invite her whole fifth-grade class to an important event—but Roberto (Wendy’s friend) and Wanda (Wendy’s sister) think inviting her class is a crazy thing for Miss Herbermen to do. Wanda and Roberto think Miss Herbermen needs to take a long vacation from her class, instead. How does Wendy (a Christian girl) survive Della Thompson, the class bully, who wants to make her miserable? How does she help Roberto, her troubled neighbor, who has a crush on her? It contains bullying and fistfights, an unwanted kiss attempt, an absent-minded, gung-ho substitute teacher, a hard-nosed, attentive substitute teacher, a hard-headed girl in high-heeled shoes, a teacher’s nervous breakdown and repentance, Christian bible scriptures, discussions about: death, Christianity, shoplifting, and drug and alcohol usage. Whatever Happened to Miss Herbermen’s Class takes a look at the life of a preteen girl; her relationship with Christ, her family, her friends, and her classmates. It’s a trip that just might make you cry, make you laugh, and entertain you.

Nazism, Fascism and the Working Class

Nazism, Fascism and the Working Class PDF Author: Timothy W. Mason
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521437875
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
This collection of essays, four of which are published in English for the first time, represents the life's work of the historian Tim Mason, one of the most original and perceptive scholars of National Socialism, who pioneered its social and labour history. His provocative articles and essays, written between 1964 and 1990, exhibit a combination of empirical rigour and theoretical astuteness which made them landmarks in the definition and elaboration of major debates in the historiography of National Socialism. These ten essays collect together Mason's most significant writings, including discussions of the domestic origins of the Second World War, the role of Hitler, and the character of working-class resistance, as well as his pathbreaking study of women under National Socialism, and examples of comparative work on fascism and Nazism. A complete bibliography of his publications is also appended.

Whatever Happened to the Egyptian Revolution?

Whatever Happened to the Egyptian Revolution? PDF Author: Galal A. Amin
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9774165896
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
In his latest exploration of the Egyptian malaise, Galal Amin first looks at the events of the months preceding the Revolution of 25 January 2011, pointing out the most important factors behind popular discontent. He then follows the ups and downs (mainly the downs) of the Revolution: the causes of rising hopes and expectations, mingled with successive disappointments, sometimes verging on despair, not least in the case of the presidential elections, when the Egyptian people were invited to choose between a rock and a hard place. This is followed by an outline of a possible brighter future for Egypt, based on a more balanced and faster growing economy, and a more democratic and equitable society, within a truly independent, modern, and secular state. The story of what happened to the 2011 Revolution may be a sad one, but if viewed within the larger context of Egypt's economic and social developments of the last century, on which the author's previous books threw very useful light, it can be regarded as one important step forward toward a much better future.

ISBN: 1136691529
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
First Published in 2000. Why do we go to the theater? There's a question! Or put it this way: Why, oh why, do we go to the theater? If we go to a movie and it isn't any good, well it's not the end of the world. We're usually quite content just the same. It passes the time. Though, as Samuel Beckett pointed out, the time would have passed anyway. But if we're disappointed at the theater, everything changes dramatically. We cannot while away the time at the theater. Time becomes precious. This is a collection of writings about the world of the theatre and includes pieces about Sir John Gielgud, Sir Ralph Richardson, Arthur Miller, Michael Bennett, Noel Coward, Barbra Streisand, Ralph Fiennes and more.

Class, Inequality and Community Development

Class, Inequality and Community Development PDF Author: Shaw, Mae
Publisher: Policy Press
ISBN: 1447322460
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
With inequality continuing to be an incredibly salient political and social issue, this book on the part it plays in community development could not be more timely. Arguing strenuously that class analysis should be central to any discussion of the potential benefits of community development, because otherwise development can simply mask the underlying causes of inequality, the book brings together contributors from a wide range of backgrounds to explore the ways that an understanding of class can offer a new path in the face of increasing social polarization.

Land Dispossession and Everyday Politics in Rural Eastern India

Land Dispossession and Everyday Politics in Rural Eastern India PDF Author: Kenneth Bo Nielsen
Publisher: Anthem Press
ISBN: 1783087498
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
Over the past decade India has witnessed a number of land wars that have centred crucially on the often forcible transfer of land from small farmers or indigenous groups to private companies. Among these, the land war that erupted in Singur, West Bengal, in 2006, went on to make national headlines and become paradigmatic of many of the challenges and social conflicts that arise when a state-led policy of swiftly transferring land to private sector companies encounters resistance on the ground. Land Dispossession and Everyday Politics in Rural Eastern India analyses the movement by Singur’s so-called unwilling farmers to retain and reclaim their farmland. By foregrounding the everyday politics of popular mobilization, the book sheds new light on the movement’s internal politics as well as on contentious issues rooted in everyday caste, class and gender relations.
