Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476617163
Category : Literary Criticism

Book Description
This collection of essays analyzes the work of 29 authors and illustrators. South African children's and youth literature has a long history. The country is the most prolific publisher of children's books on the continent, producing perhaps the highest quality literature in Africa. Its traditions resonate within the larger world of children's literature but are solidly grounded in African myth and archetypes. The African diaspora in the U.S. and elsewhere have stories rooted in these oral traditions. Much has changed in South African literature for children since the 1994 transformation of the country. A field once dominated by all white and mostly female writers and illustrators has diversified, adding many new voices.

Big Yellow ?Akc?

Big Yellow ?Akc? PDF Author: Michael Loveday
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 154628074X
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 331

Book Description
As an avid traveler for most of his adult life, author Michael Loveday has always been keen to soak up all he can about the essence of places from more unconventional sources. Not for him the pre-packaged official line served up by tourist companies, visitor guides and the like. In Big Yellow ?????, Loveday presents an unofficial travel guide - perhaps guerilla tourism. He doesnt include the choreographed, scripted, shepherded travel, packaged conveniently by tour companies and delivered comfortably, palatably and politically correctly, drawing a veil over the controversial bits. Instead, Loveday offers insights and knowledge of real people, on the ground, who may often turn your view of their world on its head and can even scare you a bit, or make you laugh hysterically, but will never leave you cozy, unchallenged, or in your comfort zone. From Albania to Zurich, the local taxi driver will take you to places you didnt anticipate, both physically and psychologically, and will leave you with a much more insightful view of their place. Someone once said there is no truth in history and the same sentiment might be applied to foreign travel so sit back, grasp your seat, clench your buttocks, expect the unexpected and enjoy the ride.

Moments in Time

Moments in Time PDF Author: Doris Durham-Vansickle
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1452057249
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 110

Book Description
The inspiration for writing poetry came years ago when I was in high school but I never seriously did anything about it until I started working in the school system. Just watching the children sometimes gave me ideas and brought a poem to mind. I guess being the mother of three, I never took the time to write anything down until I had an empty nest. Even then, I didn't get serious about writing a book until I started working at Sand Creek Elementary School five years ago. While helping third and fourth graders write simple poems. I became obsessed in writing myself. I would sometimes stay up late and write four or five poems in an evening. Some good and some not so good. One of the first poems I wrote was called Children Lost. I was inspired to write it after seeing so many children who seem to need attention they didn't get at home. Just a few kind words or praise from a teacher or an assistant was like giving them a new toy. To see their smiles when you complemented them on something done well just stole my heart. Life events would come to mind like the time my best friend and I went fishing and she was so eager to catch the big one that in her excitement to reel it in she fell and sat on it. That was the inspiration for Fishing with My Friend. Just thinking about my grandchildren would sometimes trigger a new poem. With nine grandchildren ranging in age from four to seventeen you never know what they will say or do. Whatever the reason, here are the results.

Verse Assignments

Verse Assignments PDF Author: Peggy H. Landis
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1479780405
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 135

Book Description
A gathering of poems written over Landis’s teaching life, Verse Assignments reflects themes that include classroom quotidian routine, daily family, community, and faith experience, as well as response to requests about celebratory occasions and the achievements of colleagues. Landis finds much to respect in the deeds of love that surround us and how the meaning of life can be enhanced when it is expressed in the sound and rhythm of verse. From his study and teaching of poetry, Landis is often engaged by poetic forms and enjoys the discipline of stricter rhymes and meters in older forms. While Verse Assignments contains examples of these, Landis enjoys as well the freedom from restraint and the colloquial vocabulary and informal manner of ordinary speech. Landis comes to poetry writing with the pleasant experiences given him by the teachers of his lifetime. Memorizing poems began at an early age, and he has continued to enjoy the richness of poetic language from Chaucer and Milton and Shakespeare’s inimitable poems and plays to selections from present times.

Born Again: The Limericks of Régis

Born Again: The Limericks of Régis PDF Author: Régis Auffray
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1300489243
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
Limericks, it has been said, represent the lowest form of poetry. They are generally silly or downright funny, perhaps enough to elicit a smile or even a laugh. They are challenging and fun to create because the writer has to manipulate the words in order to make them fit the requirements of the limerick genre. The limericks in this book are fictional. However, most of them were inspired by real events, experiences, persons, animals, things, etc. You may find that you think you recognize some of the individuals mentioned. You may even see yourself in one or more of the limericks presented here. Yes, some of them are satirical and perhaps even bitter. That is life I suppose. This project is for the fun of writing without any real purpose except to indulge my silliness, my childish nature, and perhaps to make the reader smile.

Little Ada and the School Bus Driver

Little Ada and the School Bus Driver PDF Author: Edward W. Slater
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1638740860
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 43

Book Description
Coming from my personal experience, driving the school buses brought me some of the most joyful and satisfying moments in my life. They are all good students. Some were in desperate need of a caring father figure or authority figure to help guide them along their way. We have all needed that caring guidance and advice given by someone in authority to help resolve problems or difficulties. Proverbs 3:5–6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
