When his brother Isaac retired from the concern with ten thousand pounds, Jacob had not precisely cheated him, perhaps, but he had made a bargain which, considered prospectively, was highly favourable to his own interest; and since he had been alone, the profits from the mill had been so considerable that his savings had vol. Book Description
Excerpt from Wenderholme a Story of Lancashire and Yorkshire, Vol. 3 of 3 Alice Stedman to Philip Stanburne. "My dear Mr Stanburne, - You made me promise to write to you, and yet I hardly can do so without feeling that it is wrong. I am afraid it is very wrong. Papa asked me what had passed between us at Wenderholme, and so, not to tell any fibs, I refused to answer him. He never was really angry with me before, but he was angry then - very angry - and he positively forbade all communication between us during what remains of my minority. In writing to you as I am doing I am disobedient, and you know my father has a right to require my obedience so far as not doing anything goes. Book Description
Excerpt from Wenderholme, Vol. 1 of 3: A Story of Lancashire and Yorkshire Mination, or very peculiar circumstances of birth, can get through them, or over them; But the novelist must get over them, and when once he has done so, it is likely that he will see some thing to approve oil-something that attracts his sympathy - in men whom the boundary lines of society have set apart as his natural enemies. He may have his moments of misanthropy, but he will always be meeting with some visible and undeniable fact in actual life that will not allow him to be a misanthropist for long. He hated some nation or class, but on coming to know it better he' sees some admirable traits which cast, as it were, a spoonful of alkali into the acid vial of his wrath. He despised some old woman because she was stingy; but finding out afterwards that she has been denying her self to save for poor nephews and nieces, he discovered that stinginess might possibly be a virtue. He scorned some Papist for believing too much, some doubter for believing too little; but on a nearer view found out that the Papist was by no means wanting either in information or common-sense, and that the sceptic had 'a sense.
