Conversations and Reflections

Conversations and Reflections PDF Author: Emyr Humphreys
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
Conversations and Reflections brings together the previously uncollected ‘occasional writings’ of Emyr Humphreys, the major novelist of twentieth-century Wales. It maps the historical and cultural background to the work of a writer who was described by R. S. Thomas as ‘the supreme interpreter of Welsh life in English’. This selection of the most important essays published by Emyr Humphreys over a fifty-year period reveals the commanding range of his interests and confirms his stature as Wales's leading man of letters. Dealing with themes ranging from sixth-century literature to the twentieth-century media, these essays address the cultural commitments from which Emyr Humphreys’ creative writing takes its bearings, as well as being a major author’s statements on ‘his’ Wales, past and present. The essays are interwoven with a parallel series of discussions, conducted with M. Wynn Thomas, which explore many of the key personal, political and cultural concerns that have recurred throughout Emyr Humphreys’ work. Conversations and Reflections provides a fascinating overview of the work of one of Wales’ most significant creative writers and cultural activists.

Publisher: Rizzoli Publications
ISBN: 0847870162
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 850

Book Description
The sequel to the critically acclaimed Visions of Seaside (2013), Reflections on Seaside celebrates the fortieth anniversary of the town of Seaside, returning to the place that has inspired countless designers, architects, urban planners, and everyday citizens in the search for the ideal home. Reflections on Seaside is the most comprehensive book on the history and development of the nation's first and most influential New Urbanist town. The book chronicles the forty-year history of the evolution and development of the town of Seaside, Florida, which has had a significant global influence on town planning around the world. The book features, among other elements, new projects built in and around the town since the last publication in 2013, and outlines a blueprint for moving forward over the next twenty-five to fifty years. Many new essays by a wide array of prominent architects and designers, including Robert A. M. Stern, Andrés Duany, Deborah Berke, Steven Holl, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Ray Gindroz, and Scott Merrill, examine urbanism today as well as sustainability and the environment. Dhiru A. Thadani, AIA, is an architect, author, and urbanist who has worked on projects across the globe and now serves as urban design consultant to several U.S. and international cities. Joseph P. Riley Jr. is an American politician who served for ten terms as mayor of Charleston, South Carolina (1975-2016). Léon Krier is an architect, architectural theorist, urban planner, and prominent advocate of New Urbanism and New Traditional architecture. He is also adviser to Charles, Prince of Wales.

"She's So Fine: Reflections on Whiteness, Femininity, Adolescence and Class in 1960s Music "

Author: Laurie Stras
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351548735
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
She's So Fine explores the music, reception and cultural significance of 1960s girl singers and girl groups in the US and the UK. Using approaches from the fields of musicology, women's studies, film and media studies, and cultural studies, this volume is the first interdisciplinary work to link close musical readings with rigorous cultural analysis in the treatment of artists such as Martha and the Vandellas, The Crystals, The Blossoms, Brenda Lee, Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Tina Turner, and Marianne Faithfull. Currently available studies of 1960s girl groups/girl singers fall into one of three categories: industry-generated accounts of the music's production and sales, sociological commentaries, or omnibus chronologies/discographies. She's So Fine, by contrast, focuses on clearly defined themes via case studies of selected artists. Within this analytical rather than historically comprehensive framework, this book presents new research and original observations on the 60s girl group/girl singer phenomenon.

Mirrors and Reflections

Mirrors and Reflections PDF Author: Charlotte Burck
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429916302
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 474

Book Description
In this volume, as the title indicates, the focus is on understanding and elaborating what might be said to be "going on" in supervision as well as further exploring what is distinctive about systemic supervision. Looking at processes within systemic supervision involves engaging with the different contexts within which the supervision takes place and engaging with a range of theories - some developed or applied within therapeutic contexts and others drawn from theories of learning. Various theoretical frameworks have emerged and been described as underpinnings for systemic supervision. Social constructionist and narrative ideas have been vital in the creation of supervisory practices that promote open dialogues, multiple perspectives and the interrogation of traditional assumptions about expertise and hierarchy. This has inevitably led to a discussion of tensions and contradictions: unease about implicit practices of power, the problematics of assessment and evaluation and issues concerning the allocation of clinical responsibility. Positioning theory, dialogic theories and ideas from the field of adult education have also contributed helpful theoretical concepts for use by systemic supervisors.
