The western honey bee, Apis mellifera, managed globally by beekeepers, forages freely in the landscape surrounding its hives and is thus reliant upon the quality of available floral resources, the long-term climate trends that shape that availability, and the immediate weather conditions affecting the bee's ability to access them. Honey bee health and survival is thus influenced by landscape, climate, and weather and as a result, distinct honey bee subspecies have adapted different strategies based on their specific environmental contexts. In North America, European subspecies of honey bees cope with the long, resource-scarce winter months by hoarding honey, reducing brood production, and overwintering in a small, thermoregulated cluster. In Africa, endemic subspecies undertake a seasonal absconding behavior, which involves reducing brood production, consuming honey stores, and leaving the hive with the entire adult bee population and the queen. Subspecies in North America and in Africa are managed by beekeepers for honey harvest and pollination provision, and as such, these behaviors present challenges to both sets of beekeepers: North American beekeepers struggle to ensure that their colonies survive the winter without starving or succumbing to pest and disease loads, while African beekeepers face pressure to balance their honey harvest schedule against the unpredictability of absconding. To deepen our understanding of how these honey bee populations and beekeepers are affected by weather and landscape, it is imperative to use geographically specific and temporally detailed data. For my thesis, I combined survey responses from beekeepers with satellite-derived weather and landscape datasets to illuminate new findings about the influence of the environment on bees and beekeepers. In Chapter 1, I combined 3,210 survey responses from beekeepers in Pennsylvania from 2017 to 2022 with gridMET meteorological data and floral resource layers derived from the National Land Cover Dataset to model winter survival across the state and investigate which factors lead to higher winter colony loss. The results from this chapter underscore the potent effects of seasonal weather factors on winter survival and indicate that beekeepers who use multiple types of treatment against an invasive pest have higher survival across a range of weather conditions. In Chapter 2, I contextualize survey responses from 31 beekeepers in two regions of Kenya with data from CHIRPS satellite-based precipitation and Sentinel-2-derived landscape classifications to investigate which environmental factors influence absconding and ask how beekeepers were perceiving changes in absconding and landscape. Results from this chapter show that beekeepers in a high-rainfall area experience absconding during the rainy months, while beekeepers from a low-rainfall area witness their bees absconding during the dry season. Both chapters of my thesis highlight the importance of weather to honey bee behavior and health and the integral role that beekeeper data can play in geographic studies.
