Book Description
Women now receive more college degrees than men, and enter the workforce with better job opportunities than ever before. Indeed, the wage gap between men and women has never been smaller. So why does the typical woman have only 36 cents for every dollar of wealth owned by the typical man? How is it that never-married women working full-time have only 16% as much wealth as similarly situated men? And why do single mothers have only 8% of the wealth of single fathers? The first book to focus on the differences in wealth between women and men, Shortchanged is a compelling and accessible examination of why women struggle to accumulate assets, who has what, and why it matters. Mariko Lin Chang draws on the most comprehensive national data on wealth and on in-depth interviews to show how differences in earnings, in saving and investing, and, most important, the demands of care-giving all contribute to the gender-wealth gap. She argues that the current focus on equal pay and family-friendly workplace policies, although important, will not ultimately change or eliminate wealth inequalities. What Chang calls the "wealth escalator"--comprised of fringe benefits, the tax code, and government benefits--and the "debt anchor" must be the targets of policies aimed at strengthening women's financial resources. Chang proposes a number of practical suggestions to address the unequal burdens and consequences of care-giving, so that women who work just as hard as men will not be left standing in financial quicksand. A comprehensive portrait of where women and men stand with respect to wealth, Shortchanged not only sheds light on why women lack wealth, but also offers solutions for improving the financial situation of women, men, and families.

The Wealth of Wives
Author: Barbara A. Hanawalt
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198042604
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 332
Book Description
London became an international center for import and export trade in the late Middle Ages. The export of wool, the development of luxury crafts and the redistribution of goods from the continent made London one of the leading commercial cities of Europe. While capital for these ventures came from a variety of sources, the recirculation of wealth through London women was important in providing both material and social capital for the growth of London's economy. A shrewd Venetian visiting England around 1500 commented about the concentration of wealth and property in women's hands. He reported that London law divided a testator's property three ways allowing a third to the wife for her life use, a third for immediate inheritance of the heirs, and a third for burial and the benefit of the testator's soul. Women inherited equally with men and widows had custody of the wealth of minor children. In a society in which marriage was assumed to be a natural state for women, London women married and remarried. Their wealth followed them in their marriages and was it was administered by subsequent husbands. This study, based on extensive use of primary source materials, shows that London's economic growth was in part due to the substantial wealth that women transmitted through marriage. The Italian visitor observed that London men, unlike Venetians, did not seek to establish long patrilineages discouraging women to remarry, but instead preferred to recirculate wealth through women. London's social structure, therefore, was horizontal, spreading wealth among guilds rather than lineages. The liquidity of wealth was important to a growing commercial society and women brought not only wealth but social prestige and trade skills as well into their marriages. But marriage was not the only economic activity of women. London law permitted women to trade in their own right as femmes soles and a number of women, many of them immigrants from the countryside, served as wage laborers. But London's archives confirm women's chief economic impact was felt in the capital and skill they brought with them to marriages, rather than their profits as independent traders or wage laborers.

Wine, Women & Wealth

Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 139
Book Description
Imagine how great life would be if you knew the money rules ahead of time and the tools you could use to create great financial success. This book breaks the long-standing taboo that it’s “not polite” to talk about money... right up there with politics, sex and religion. Which means that money is not talked about at cocktail parties, it’s not talked about around the dinner table, it’s not talked about in the classroom - or anywhere else for that matter! ...Until now. Years ago, working as a financial professional I realized that many women had little-to-no education about personal finance. That, coupled with the fact that almost all women will have total control over their money at some point in their lives, yet most feel completely unprepared for that, set me on a mission to educate and empower women regarding their finances. This book creates a place of inspiration and reference for all women who want more success in their relationship with money.

Women, Wealth and Wisdom
Author: Steven Wightman
Publisher: CreateSpace
ISBN: 9781484905449
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 252
Book Description
Written as Lightning in a bottle to assist American women age 50 or older seeking financial independence and a better life, Women, Wealth & Wisdom; Unleash the Fire Within to a Life of Purpose blends life and financial planning into one practical guide. Having our own money wisdom trumps family acrimony. If divorce, addictions and suicide are rooted in financial woes it is clear that finances affect our mental and consequently our physical health. By conquering the final frontier, personal finances, women can transcend to a higher intellectual state – one of wisdom and its shadow benefit, enduring vitality and power.Women, Wealth and Wisdom: Unleash the Fire Within to a Life of Purpose is about being psychologically and fiscally prepared for the complex financial world of tomorrow. For example, retirement security is the grave concern of Americans today. Millions of Baby boomers go on Social Security retirement pensions every year. Most are ill prepared for their heavy burdens of escalating costs of health and long term care on one hand and they fear they'll outlive their meager savings on the other. The latter becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy because most boomers take the lowest offer on Social Security's table, age 62 retirements. Half of this group, women, have triple worries: First, lower Social Security benefits than men; second, higher longevity will increase their risk of being bankrupt and finally relative financial illiteracy coupled with surviving their spouses often steals the very wealth that may have carried them through. Based on research and anecdotes of working with women for more than a decade as a fee-only NAPFA Registered Financial Adviser, Wightman's new second edition leads readers to clearly see that we all have a life of choices and that the direction we take at each juncture define our destinies. These very choices make the difference between prosperity or poverty, vitality or vanity, health or hospitals. With little-known tools, strategies and resources well tested in the real world by a now retired financial adviser, Wightman shares his hitherto secret solutions and inspires his readers to seek free fee-only financial advice via weekly free conference calls moderated by Certified Financial Planner licensed Advisers and access a life of power, purpose and prosperity; a life now of fire and focus.
