He was appointed by Michael Collins to the committee which prepared drafts for the first Irish constitution in 1922. He was a Member of Seanad Eireann 1922-36, 1938-43 and 1944-54. These previously unpublished memoirs were written in the late 1940s and relate his involvement in the events of 1916 to 1926. He casts fresh light on some of these events - revealing for example his secret meetings with de Valera in the closing stages of the Civil War.
