Pages : 254

Book Description
A Way to Live Now juxtaposes the dual roles of fiction writer and journalist throughout the career of Ernest Hemingway. Focusing on the author’s appearances in Esquire over forty years, John Fenstermaker traces the evolving nature of Hemingway’s presence in its pages: first as the author of twenty-five essays (1933–1936) and six short stories (1936–1939), then as a popular subject for interactions among editors, subscribers, and critics (1933–1961), a process that continued posthumously with reprintings, miscellanea, and reader commentaries (1961–1973). Developing a friendship and correspondence with founding editor Arnold Gingrich, Hemingway contributed to twenty-eight of the magazine’s first thirty-three issues, including classic pieces such as “On the Blue Water” and “The Snows of Kilimanjaro.” Through Esquire, Fenstermaker finds a portal for tracing a documentary record of Hemingway as both writer and public figure. Filled with incisive commentaries on his roles as reporter, essayist, and fiction writer, A Way to Live Now: How Journalism Shaped Ernest Hemingway offers new perspectives on the eventful life and work of one of the twentieth century’s most influential authors and complicated personalities.

Book Description
"Some trainers recommend to their pupils for the training of all muscle groups one and the same (light) weight and believe they are able to obtain the same effect by frequent repetitions. My experience has taught me that this is wrong, for the muscles of men or animals who are distinguished for certain feats of endurance are by no means over-developed. A long-distance runner or long-distance cyclist always has comparatively thin legs, as have a racehorse, stag, or greyhound. Nature does not act without aim and purpose. Hence there is a great difference between feats of endurance and feats of strength. One must consider that, although it is quite possible to enlarge muscles by certain light, prolonged exercises, at the same time the development of the sinews may be neglected, and it is the sinews which transport the action of the muscles to the bone xframe. The sinews can only be exercised and strengthened by correspondingly heavy muscle work. Besides, to take a paradoxical example, it is quite impossible to improve strong muscle groups, as, for instance, the hip muscles, with light-weight exercises. A further illustration of the fallacy of attempting to develop the muscles by frequent repetitions with the same light exercises may be found in a comparison with any and every other form of athletics, in which a man would never think of merely repeating his training programme. In order to improve himself either in pace or distance, he must set himself a steady progression of arduous effort". - George Hackenschmidt This is an original version, restored and re-formatted edition of Hackenschmidt's 1908 classic. Find happiness at home with five guiding principles from cultural phenomenon THE MODERN HOUSE. 'A source of fascination, inspiration and fantasy' Guardian In 2005, childhood friends Matt Gibberd and Albert Hill set out to convince people of the power of good design and its ability to influence our wellbeing. They founded The Modern House - in equal parts an estate agency, a publisher and a lifestyle brand - and went on to inspire a generation to live more thoughtfully and beautifully at home. As The Modern House grew, Matt and Albert came to realise that the most successful homes they encountered - from cleverly conceived studio flats to listed architectural masterpieces - had been designed with attention to the same timeless principles: Space, Light, Materials, Nature and Decoration. In this lavishly illustrated book, Matt tells the stories of these remarkable living spaces and their equally remarkable owners, and demonstrates how the five principles can be applied to your own space in ways both large and small. Revolutionary in its simplicity, and full of elegance, humour and joy, this book will inspire you to find happiness in the place you call home.
