Since March 2011 the artists, Joshua Rowan and Libby Reuter, have been creating images that draw attention to places in the St. Louis Region where the land is collecting the water, cleaning and conducting it to streams, and, ultimately, to the Missouri and finally the Mississippi River. These same rivers are the source of much of the region's drinking water. Believing it is art's role to make the invisible-visible, and that there is no more important resource for the future than clean water, Reuter and Rowan set out to mark little known waterscapes where one can see the watershed at work or where the natural streams have been harmed or buried. After the photographs are made, the fragile cairns are removed from the landscape. By exhibiting these powerful images (identified by their street address and GIS locator) at community festivals, the artists aim for "watershedification" a broad public understanding of the watershed's importance.

Since 2011, Watershed Cairns® artists Libby Reuter and Joshua Rowan have collaborated to depict the bountiful land and water of the Mississippi River basin and to express the ways that we use or abuse these vital resources. They travel on roads near the rivers, stopping to place and photograph Reuter's sculptures, or cairns. Reuter's cairns are inspired by the rocks that hikers stack to mark a trail, or as a memorial. But, her material isn't rock. She assembles household glass from local thrift stores to make these fragile watershed markers. Each cairn is strategically positioned in some of the most compelling and unexpected sites along the great rivers. The locations are chosen to comment on the condition or history of the land and water at that place. The cairns also mark the watersheds metaphorically as fragile, beautiful, and deeply connected to everyday life. After Rowan photographs them, the location is recorded, and the cairns are removed and stored for later exhibits alongside the luminous large-scale, color photographs. Each image is identified by its physical address, its latitude and longitude, and details about the watershed at that location.

This book analyzes how contemporary visual art can visualize environmental crisis. It draws on Karen Barad’s method of “agential realism,” which understands disparate factors as working together and “entangled.” Through an analysis of digital eco art, the book shows how the entwining of new materialist and decolonized approaches accounts for the nonhuman factors shaping ecological crises while understanding that a purely object-driven approach misses the histories of human inequality and subjugation encoded in the environment. This book takes a new approach to writing about the past. Instead of studying the prehistory of Britain from Mesolithic to Iron Age times in terms of periods or artifact classifications, Tilley examines it through the lens of their geology and landscapes, asserting the fundamental significance of the bones of the land in the process of human occupation over the long durée.
