Plants and Landscapes for Summer-dry Climates of the San Francisco Bay Region

Plants and Landscapes for Summer-dry Climates of the San Francisco Bay Region PDF Author: Nora Harlow
Publisher: East Bay Munic. Util. District
ISBN:
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
Gardening. Environmental Studies. Photographs by Saxon Holt. Illustrations by Richard Pembroke. This lavishly illustrated book celebrates the challenges and opportunities of gardening in Mediterranean climates, with special reference to northern California's San Francisco Bay Region. The core of the book is a catalog of more than 650 plants suited to regions with mild, usually wet winters and dry, often hot summers. These plants thrive with moderate to no summer irrigation when established, require little or no maintenance, and are reasonably available from nurseries, botanic gardens, native plant sales, or specialty seed suppliers. Many of the 542 color photographs show plants in garden settings to suggest attractive and compatible plant combinations. Summary charts provide information on each plant, such as bloom time, needs for water and sun, and preferences for coastal or inland microclimates. Lists suggest plants for special situations, such as hot sites, dryish shade, small gardens, and clay soils. Chapters on landscape design and maintenance inspire readers to make gardens that use little water and no harmful chemicals, with a focus on building healthy soil. Practical steps to successful design are supplemented with ideas for designing with microclimate, attracting wildlife, and fire safety. Sidebars by local experts discuss weather, natural landscapes, design solutions, and gardening with recycled water. "A valuable resource for climate-compatible gardening in the San Franciso Bay Area that will also be of interest to gardeners in other parts of the world with a similar seasonal pattern of winter rain and dry summers. This book will occupy a prominent place in my library for many years to come." Katherine Greenberg, president Mediterranean Garden Society "This book is beautifully designed with abundant photographs of plants, many in garden settings, and it is packed with the kind of information gardeners need for their own special situations. Simply stunning Bravo " Phyllis M. Faber, editor University of California Press"

The California Native Landscape

The California Native Landscape PDF Author: Greg Rubin
Publisher: Timber Press
ISBN: 1604692324
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 373

Book Description
Water shortages and water rationing are commonplace throughout California, rendering expanses of lawn and thirsty, nonnative plants unsustainable. The California Native Landscape addresses both concerns by showing homeowners how to succeed with natives and showing them how lush, colorful, and thriving their landscape can be. The authors stress the importance of smart garden design and combining the right plants to promote the natural symbiosis that occurs within plant communities. Native plants also play an important role in creating fire-resistant landscapes, and this new book has cutting-edge information on this crucial topic, refuting the myth that natives are more fire-prone than nonnatives. With its unique combination of proven techniques, environmental wisdom, and inspiring design advice, this is an essential resource for all California gardeners who want to create a beautiful, ecologically appropriate, and resource-conserving home landscape.

"Operation Smart Water" - Developing Water Conservation Strategies for Residents of the Chino Basin Water Conservation District Service Area

Author: Matthew Jesse Ramirez
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781085598903
Category : Dissertations, Academic
Languages : en
Pages : 40

Book Description
Southern California is an environment that is prone to drought conditions. Nevertheless, many residents have high water use landscaping, which makes conserving water difficult. Through an internship with the Earthwatch Institute, we sought to test different hypotheses concerning how different social-environmental vulnerabilities as defined by CalEnviroScreen would affect the choice of front yard landscapes that differ in projected water-use-efficiency, and the degree to which households choose to let their yards brown by using less water than their landscape needs. As part of the Operation Smart Water project of the Earthwatch Institute, we worked with the Chino Basin Water Conservation District, who are actively involved in monitoring water use for the region, and their service area to conduct this study. Their water savings program, audits and educational programs help disseminate water conservation strategies across their service area. We used Google Maps Street View to survey and score hundreds of landscapes within the service area, allowing for a more efficient way of collecting data. We found a 9% decrease in the number of trees and highest water use yards across all CalEnviroScreen regions and in both audited and non-audited residents post drought. There was also a 5% increase in water efficient yards. Lawn brownness increased after the drought across the region, but no definitive answer explaining the increase could be reached due to image date and seasonal variation. We highlight a combination of factors that led to the adoption of more water efficient landscaping, but could not point to any single factor in terms of economics or demographics.

Flower Confidential

Flower Confidential PDF Author: Amy Stewart
Publisher: Algonquin Books
ISBN: 1565126459
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
A globe-trotting, behind-the-scenes look at the dazzling world of flowers and the fascinating industry it has created. Award-winning author Amy Stewart takes readers on an around-the-world, behind-the-scenes look at the flower industry and how it has sought—for better or worse—to achieve perfection. She tracks down the hybridizers, geneticists, farmers, and florists working to invent, manufacture, and sell flowers that are bigger, brighter, and sturdier than anything nature can provide. There's a scientist intent on developing the first genetically modified blue rose; an eccentric horticultural legend who created the most popular lily; a breeder of gerberas of every color imaginable; and an Ecuadorean farmer growing exquisite roses, the floral equivalent of a Tiffany diamond. And, at every turn she discovers the startling intersection of nature and technology, of sentiment and commerce.

The Dreamt Land

The Dreamt Land PDF Author: Mark Arax
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 1101875216
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 577

Book Description
A vivid, searching journey into California's capture of water and soil—the epic story of a people's defiance of nature and the wonders, and ruin, it has wrought Mark Arax is from a family of Central Valley farmers, a writer with deep ties to the land who has watched the battles over water intensify even as California lurches from drought to flood and back again. In The Dreamt Land, he travels the state to explore the one-of-a-kind distribution system, built in the 1940s, '50s and '60s, that is straining to keep up with California's relentless growth. The Dreamt Land weaves reportage, history and memoir to confront the "Golden State" myth in riveting fashion. No other chronicler of the West has so deeply delved into the empires of agriculture that drink so much of the water. The nation's biggest farmers—the nut king, grape king and citrus queen—tell their story here for the first time. Arax, the native son, is persistent and tough as he treks from desert to delta, mountain to valley. What he finds is hard earned, awe-inspiring, tragic and revelatory. In the end, his compassion for the land becomes an elegy to the dream that created California and now threatens to undo it.
