"INTRODUCTION: This report summarizes a field geomorphologic investigation by Golder Associates Inc. (Golder) of 18 lineaments located between approximate kilometre post (KP) 350 and KP 830, along the proposed Mackenzie Gas Project natural gas pipeline Right-of-Way (ROW) .... These lineaments were identified by ColtKBR as possibly representing potential active fault locations along the ROW. The 18 lineaments were selected for investigation by ColtKBR based on interpretations by a surficial geologist on the staff of ColtKBR. The approach and methodology used by the ColtKBR surficial geologist are discussed in Section 1.2. The purpose of Golder's geomorphologic investigation was to identify and evaluate the potential tectonic nature of each of the 18 lineaments, and their potential (if any) to be active surface faults. Active surface faults could produce damage to, or otherwise affect the proposed Mackenzie Gas Project pipeline. The objectives of Golder's investigation were: 1. To evaluate whether the 18 lineaments identified by ColtKBR using geological maps and LiDAR could represent geomorphic evidence of active faulting; and 2. To collect information to evaluate the type, orientation, recurrence interval, and expected magnitude of displacement of the fault, if a lineament was interpreted to be an active fault. For the purposes of this report, an active fault is one for which there is geomorphic or geologic evidence that the fault has experienced surface displacement in the Holocene Epoch (i.e., the post-glacial period, or about the past 10,000 years). A description of the geomorphic and geologic features that define active faults is provided in Section 2.0. 1.1 Background and History: The proposed Mackenzie Gas Project natural gas pipeline begins in the Mackenzie delta, and follows the east side of the Mackenzie River Valley to northern Alberta .... In 2005, Klohn Crippen (2005) released a report prepared for ColtKBR, presenting potential seismic hazards for the proposed Mackenzie Gas Project [described in ASTIS record 59191]. Klohn Crippen concluded that several surface-penetrating faults exist along the proposed Mackenzie Gas Project natural gas pipeline between Fort Good Hope and Trail River (approximately between KP 350 and KP 911). They also concluded that these faults were ancient or inactive, with the most recent activity about 40 million years ago. Based on their literature search and review, Klohn Crippen found no evidence for active faults along the pipeline route. However, they recommended field investigations to verify that active faults were not present between Fort Good Hope and Trail River. The seismic and tectonic setting of this portion of Mackenzie Gas Project pipeline are discussed in Section 3.0. ... The decade of the 1970's was the beginning of a long process to bring natural gas discovered in the Mackenzie River Delta to southern markets through a pipeline running down the Mackenzie valley. Mr. Justice Thomas Berger placed a ten-year moratorium on the project to allow for native groups to settle land claims, and to allow for more extensive environmental assessments on the surrounding natural environment and sustainability of the local inhabitants. The Producer Group and an Aboriginal Pipeline Group now plan to have a pipeline up and running by the year 2010. The proposed pipeline will require the use of large amounts of granular resources. Anchor fields, facility and infrastructure sites, and the pipeline are estimated to require 5 million cubic meters of resources. The management of granular resources in the north is vital to ensure present reserves are used to their full potential and correctly allocated to prevent unnecessary waste. This project will help consolidate information, and extract relevant data needed to produce maps and background information for the pipeline corridor. Through digitization one-hundred-thirty-seven (137) digital photographs representing the main pipeline and gathering system were used to extract data pertinent to the construction of the proposed Mackenzie Valley Pipeline, including existing Enbridge pipeline features. Each of the following data features were documented using FDGC metadata standards and corresponding attributes were recorded in an attached database. The database documentation can be viewed by selecting the desired deposit polygon, line, or point using Manifold GIS 6.00. The digitization of the following was prepared using this software package -- ASTIS (online) database.
