Beyond Braveheart - Wallace Family Roots 1076-2003

Book Description
This is the book we longed for as we researched the Wallace family tree! It spans 30 generations 1076 2003. The surname, Wallace, originated with "Richard of Wales", born in Wales approximately 1076. He moved to Scotland, where he prospered and founded a town known to this day as Riccarton in Ayrshire. He is the great, great grandfather of Sir William Wallace Brave-heart - Defender of Scotland. English political pressure and religious turmoil caused many Scots to flee Scotland, settling in Ulster, Ireland. Later, religious turmoil in Ulster caused massive migration to America in the mid 1600's. Matthew Wallace, born 1630, in Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland, arrived in Maryland in 1648. Settling in Somerset County, he became a planter and with fellow immigrants from Ireland, John McKnight and William Alexander, became known as "the Three Kings of Manokin." As the family grew, it began "moving on", some to New England, some to Virginia, others to North Carolina. Today, Wallaces referenced in this book reside in 47 of the 50 United States. Commodore Perry, President Polk, George Wythe, Lew Wallace, Physicians, Clergy, Educators, Military and Civil service are part of this Wallace Saga.

Book Description
He taught us so much: how to love one another (he was always wanting to be with us), how to laugh at ourselves (he always had something funny to say), how to be brave (he faced cancer and death without a tear, only looking forward to any remaining life), how to cook (9-vegetable stew was his specialty), how to deal with disappointment, how to be grateful (he was so thankful for the last thing you did for him), how to shop for bargains (he would buy mostly sale items), how to give (always giving to others), how to enjoy a walk (walks on the beach), how to climb mountains (Smokey Mountain hikes), how to travel (always ready to go), how to be responsible, how to be loyal, how to be a good son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. So we tell this story because our hearts will not let us be silent, so that we can remember, so that later family generations will know how he lived, so that all people will know how God can take a young boy with very little of this world's goods and transform him to a one of the world's richest men (a man God loved, a man dearly loved by his family and friends). He showed us how to live. He made us aspire to be better people, to care for and love our families and to love God.
