Book Description
Twenty eight walks varying in length from 2 to 7 1/2 miles. Photographs illustrate many of the features to be seen on the walks. Using over sixty years of knowledge of Dartmoor, Michael Caton leads you on a series of 28 walks based on paths and trackways over the moor. Some of these walks are based on those led by the author for the Dartmoor Preservation Association. Many of the walks have not been described in previous guidebooks or are not shown on the OS 1:25,000 map. The walks are for those who wish to venture well into the open moor without having to negotiate the rough Dartmoor terrain. A section has been included on the origin and history of the tracks including special comment on the route of the well known Abbot’s Way. There is also a section describing briefly what to see on the walks, including prehistoric monuments, medieval and later remains such as mining and granite crosses, as well as flora and fauna. The walks have been arranged in order around the southern and then the northern moor. Each walk starts at a suitable parking place. The routes are described in detail with appropriate grid references and brief information on the scenery and features to be seen. The start of all the walks is shown on an overview map of Dartmoor. About half of the routes are circular whereas others are more suited to a linear course. The walk descriptions are accompanied by maps in which the route has been sketched out on the appropriate section of the 1:25,000 OS map. A separate section gives advice to walkers and explains how to use this guide. It also draws attention to safety issues of walking on Dartmoor, including the dangers of military firing and adverse weather conditions.

Book Description
A guidebook to 39 day walks and one two-day Ten Tors challenge across the Dartmoor National Park and its surrounding area. The guide contains low-level shorter walks and higher level more strenuous and challenging routes, therefore there's a walk suitable for all abilities, allowing you to explore all of what Devon's national park has to offer. Each walk contains a detailed route description, 1:50,000 OS maps and colour photography, alongside practical information on public transport links and refreshment stops on each walk. Dartmoor, a National Park since 1951, is wild, and at times isolated. Its a land of blanket bogs and grass moors dotted with fascinating tors, old stone clapper bridges, tree-shaded river valleys and a diverse range of wildlife. Our ancestors have left behind a fascinating treasure trove from intriguing stone rows to fascinating stones circles and burial cairns to hut circles. There are also the stark ruins of Dartmoor's mining heritage, picturesque villages and hamlets that are home to interesting old churches and cosy pubs. You'll be able to stand on High Willhays which, at 621m (2039 ft), is not only a mountain, but also the highest point in Southern England. On a clear day from many of Dartmoor's summits there are great views out over Devon's rural landscape and west into Cornwall to Bodmin Moor.

Walking Dartmoor's Ancient Tracks

Walking Dartmoor's Ancient Tracks PDF Author: Eric Hemery
Publisher: Robert Hale Limited
ISBN: 9780709060758
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
This is the definitive guide to Dartmoor's most important and hitherto uncharted historic tracks. The moor's traditional travel routes have been shrouded in mystery and many of them were in danger of being lost altogether. Through meticulous research and intensive field work over decades, Eric Hemery established the historical background to the 28 tracks described here. An important feature of track-routing throughout the book is the use of recorded evidence from experienced moormen, present and past, for route details. Detailed maps and illustrations allow readers to follow in the steps of monks, merchants, tin miners, and others who over the centuries established safe ways across the treacherous moor.
