The Swedish Wage Structure

The Swedish Wage Structure PDF Author: Per-Anders Edin
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Labor supply
Languages : en
Pages : 84

Book Description
Wage inequality in Sweden declined precipitously during the 1960s and the 1970s. There was a sharp reduction in overall wage dispersion and in the relative earnings advantage of highly-educated workers, a marked narrowing of wage differences between men and women, and a trend increase in youth relative wages. There was also a substantial narrowing of wage differentials among workers within broad occupational and educational groups. The trend decline in wage inequality was broken in the 1980s. Wage differentials along several dimensions have widened modestly from the rnid-1980s to the early 1990s. Much of the Swedish discussion has taken it for granted that the pay compression has been driven by the egalitarian ambitions of strong and coordinated trade unions. Our analysis of the Swedish wage structure suggests that institutions are only part of the story. We show that conventional demand and supply factors can go a substantial way towards explaining some key relative wage movements in Sweden.

Sweden and the 'Third Way'

Sweden and the 'Third Way' PDF Author: Philip Whyman
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351760505
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
This title was first published in 2003. The creation of a 'Third Way' between unfettered capitalism and old-style Keynesian-corporatist forms of social democracy has become the driving force behind the policy programmes of many left-of-centre political parties in the industrialised nations of the world today. Sweden and the 'Third Way' critically evaluates this 'new' social democracy by examining the profound shift in Swedish political economy from being the prototype old-style social democracy towards the 'Third Way' synthesis of neo-liberalism and elements of traditional social democracy. Philip Whyman evaluates internal and external challenges to Swedish macroeconomic policy - including globalisation, European integration, post-Fordist technological change and the relative empowerment of capital - to discover the extent to which national economic autonomy is constrained. Furthermore, he considers the plausibility of revising the core elements of the traditional 'Swedish Model' as an alternative to the prevailing macroeconomic platform.

The Role of Collective Bargaining in the Global Economy

The Role of Collective Bargaining in the Global Economy PDF Author: Susan Hayter
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN: 1849809836
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
The book examines the ways in which collective bargaining addresses a variety of workplace concerns in the context of today.s global economy. Globalization can contribute to growth and development, but as the recent financial crisis demonstrated, it also puts employment, earnings and labourstandards at risk. This book examines the role that collective bargaining plays in ensuring that workers are able to obtain a fair share of the benefits arising from participation in the global economy and in providing a measure of security against the risk to employment and wages. It focuses on a commonly neglected side of the story and demonstrates the positivecontribution that collective bargaining can make to both economic and social goals. The various contributions examine how this fundamental principle and right at work is realized in different countries and how its practice can be reinforced across borders. They highlight the numerouschallenges in this regard and the critically important role that governments play in rebalancing bargaining power in a global economy. The chapters are written in an accessible style and deal with practical subjects, including employment security, workplace change and productivity and working time.
