Book Description
We test for volatility transmission between US and the six largest Latin American stock markets (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru) using MGARCH-BEKK models in daily frequency from March 1993 to March 2013. As expected, we find strong evidence of volatility transmission from US to the Latin American markets but not so in the opposite direction. Testing the hypothesis of decoupling between US and Brazil and Mexico the evidence goes against it: the conditional correlations between US and the two emerging markets have steadily increased over the sample period and the volatility transmission have become more significant from 2003 onwards. We also find some evidence on the leadership of Brazil in the region, being the only Latin American stock market consistently transmitting volatility to US.

Book Description
The impact of foreign participation on the integration of Latin American equity markets with the world capital markets and transmission of volatility between the United States and Latin America is investigated with various investment liberalizations. First, the risk exposure of Latin American equity markets as measured by the beta on the world portfolio is found to increase after liberalization in Argentina and Brazil while it increases in Chile with an index of ADRs listed in the U.S. Second, the volatility of the Argentine and Brazilian markets is found to decline significantly after liberalization and with various measures of foreign participation. Third, the transmission of volatility from the U.S. to Latin America is found to increase significantly in Mexico after liberalization. However, volatility is found to be driven primarily by domestic factors in Argentina, Brazil and Chile. It is concluded that foreign participation in Latin American equity markets has increased the influence of world returns on local market returns while the volatility of Latin American equity markets has declined under various investment liberalizations.

Financial Linkages Between the U.S. and Latin America

Financial Linkages Between the U.S. and Latin America PDF Author: Roberto Benelli

Book Description
Motivated by recent bursts of global financial market turbulence, this paper investigates the linkages between the financial markets in the United States and those of the seven largest Latin American economies, focusing on the impact of shocks originating in the U.S. stock, bond, and currency markets. After documenting that cross-country linkages were different in "tranquil" and "turbulent" times within our sample, we find that: (i) for stock markets, recent episodes of market turbulence stood out from preceding ones as they showed an increased sensitivity of Latin American markets to U.S. shocks, reversing a trend of weakening linkages; (ii) currency markets in Latin America exhibited a decrease in cross-market linkages with the U.S. during the last episodes of volatility, consistent with increased exchange rate flexibility in the region; and (iii) the external bond markets in Latin America remained on a trend of weakening linkages with U.S. corporate bonds, while they increased their sensitivity to movements in other emerging market bond markets.

Book Description
In a global economy beset by concerns over a growth recession, financial volatility, and rising inflation, countries in the Western Hemisphere have been among the few bright spots in recent years. This has not come as a surprise to those following the significant progress achieved by many countries in recent years, both in macroeconomic management and on the structural and institutional front. Hence, there can be little doubt, as this book argues, that economic and financial linkages between Latin America, the United States, and other important regions of the world economy have undergone profound change.
