La nitrification du lixiviat avant recirculation dans les installations de stockage de déchets ménagers et assimilés (ISDMA) bioactives a été proposée comme une stratégie permettant de limiter les risques d'accumulation d'azote ammoniacal. L'objectif de la thèse vise à déterminer le devenir des oxydes d'azote lors de leur injection dans un massif de déchets ménagers en cours de dégradation. Dans des flacons à plasma (1,1 litre, 40 g de déchets ménagers et assimilés reconstitués), système discontinu et saturé en lixiviat, des injections de 250 mg N NOx/l ont été effectuées au cours des différentes phases de biodégradation de déchets à 35 °C. La réduction du nitrate en phase d'acidogenèse et de méthanogenèse active, en présence de carbone facilement biodégradable, a été réalisée majoritairement par dénitrification hétérotrophe. Toutefois, lorsque la concentration en H2S dépassait 0,7 % dans le biogaz (ou 0,5 mmol H2Sdissous/l de lixiviat), le nitrate a été réduit en ammonium (nitrammonification), empêchant l'azote d'être éliminé du système. Cette observation a été confirmée au cours d'une expérimentation de traçage à l'aide de nitrate marqué (15NO3-). Enfin, en phase de méthanogenèse stable, en absence, dans le lixiviat, de carbone organique facilement utilisable par les micro organismes, le nitrate a été réduit par dénitrification autotrophe à l'aide de sulfure. Un éventuel relargage de métaux libres n'a pas été décelé. Une accumulation transitoire de N2O a en revanche été détectée au cours de la nitrammonification et de la dénitrification autotrophe. Dans une colonne expérimentale de déchets (0,2 m3, 80 kg de déchets reconstitués) en phase de méthanogenèse, les taux de réduction du nitrate en N2 obtenus lors de l'apport en NO3- sous forme de KNO3 (280 mg N/jour pendant 77 jours) et sous forme de lixiviat nitrifié (61 mg N/jour pendant 54 jours) ont respectivement été de 113 % et de 203 %. Le front de dénitrification a pu être suivi au moyen de sondes d'oxydo réduction placées à trois niveaux dans le massif de déchets. Bien que le N2O n'ait jamais été détecté, une faible production ne peut être exclue. L'utilisation du massif de déchets comme réacteur anoxique a bien permis d'éliminer l'azote du système, essentiellement sous forme de N2.
