Vladimir Propp and the Universal Folktale

Vladimir Propp and the Universal Folktale PDF Author: Peter Gilet
Publisher: Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
Dr. Peter Gilet takes Vladimir Propp's 31-part structure of the European folktale and suggests a reduction to five moves. This allows Propp's structure to be applied successfully to stories from Africa, Eurasia, and the Americas, thus providing a widespread tale type, perhaps the main tale type in oral literature. Dr. Gilet also suggests that this type has strong meaningful similarities with shamanic and puberty initiation rituals in pre-industrial societies. Just how meaningful will be the object of future research.

Vladimir Propp and the Universal Folktale. a Rewriting of the Original Study

Book Description
This book is a rewriting, an extension and a clarification of a book now out of print. I reaffirm my original thesis that the Wonder Tale of Vladimir Propp is a form of narrative paradigm present in many folk tale collections in the world, and resembles in structure the hunter-gatherer initiation ceremony. I extend this idea to written literature, using a medieval romance and modern fantasies to illustrate the tale's presence even here. I suggest in my conclusion that human societies bigger than the nuclear family need a story, a narrative, a "dreaming" to motivate their members, and that this is it. The implications are interesting.

The Russian Folktale by Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp

The Russian Folktale by Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp PDF Author: Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp
Publisher: Wayne State University Press
ISBN: 081433721X
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 413

Book Description
Vladimir Propp is the Russian folklore specialist most widely known outside Russia thanks to the impact of his 1928 book Morphology of the Folktale-but Morphology is only the first of Propp's contributions to scholarship. This volume translates into English for the first time his book The Russian Folktale, which was based on a seminar on Russian folktales that Propp taught at Leningrad State University late in his life. Edited and translated by Sibelan Forrester, this English edition contains Propp's own text and is supplemented by notes from his students. The Russian Folktale begins with Propp's description of the folktale's aesthetic qualities and the history of the term; the history of folklore studies, first in Western Europe and then in Russia and the USSR; and the place of the folktale in the matrix of folk culture and folk oral creativity. The book presents Propp's key insight into the formulaic structure of Russian wonder tales (and less schematically than in Morphology, though in abbreviated form), and it devotes one chapter to each of the main types of Russian folktales: the wonder tale, the "novellistic" or everyday tale, the animal tale, and the cumulative tale. Even Propp's bibliography, included here, gives useful insight into the sources accessible to and used by Soviet scholars in the third quarter of the twentieth century. Propp's scholarly authority and his human warmth both emerge from this well-balanced and carefully structured series of lectures. An accessible introduction to the Russian folktale, it will serve readers interested in folklore and fairy-tale studies in addition to Russian history and cultural studies.

Book Description
This seminal work by the renowned Russian folklorist presents his groundbreaking structural analysis of classic fairytales and their genres. One of the most influential works of 20th century literary criticism, Vladimir Propp’s Morphology of the Folk Tale is essential reading for anyone interested in examining the structural characteristics of fairytales. Since it first appeared in English in 1958, this groundbreaking study has had a major impact on the work of folklorists, linguists, anthropologists, and literary critics. “Propp’s work is seminal…[and], now that it is available in a new edition, should be even more valuable to folklorists who are directing their attention to the form of the folktale, especially those structural characteristics which are common to many entries coming from different cultures.”—Choice

How to Read a Folktale

How to Read a Folktale PDF Author: Lee Haring
Publisher: Open Book Publishers
ISBN: 1909254053
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
How to Read a Folktale offers the first English translation of Ibonia, a spellbinding tale of old Madagascar. Ibonia is a folktale on epic scale. Much of its plot sounds familiar: a powerful royal hero attempts to rescue his betrothed from an evil adversary and, after a series of tests and duels, he and his lover are joyfully united with a marriage that affirms the royal lineage. These fairytale elements link Ibonia with European folktales, but the tale is still very much a product of Madagascar. It contains African-style praise poetry for the hero; it presents Indonesian-style riddles and poems; and it inflates the form of folktale into epic proportions. Recorded when the Malagasy people were experiencing European contact for the first time, Ibonia proclaims the power of the ancestors against the foreigner. Through Ibonia, Lee Haring expertly helps readers to understand the very nature of folktales. His definitive translation, originally published in 1994, has now been fully revised to emphasize its poetic qualities, while his new introduction and detailed notes give insight into the fascinating imagination and symbols of the Malagasy. Haring’s research connects this exotic narrative with fundamental questions not only of anthropology but also of literary criticism.
