Book Description
Girolamo Savonarola (1452–1498), the religious reformer, preacher, and Florentine civic leader, was burned at the stake as a false prophet by the order of Pope Alexander VI. Tamar Herzig here explores the networks of Savonarola’s female followers that proliferated in the two generations following his death. Drawing on sources from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, many never before studied, transcribed, or contextualized in Savonarolan scholarship and religious history, Herzig shows how powerful public figures and clerics continued to ally themselves with these holy women long after the prophet’s death. In their quest to stay true to their leader’s teachings, Savonarola’s female followers faced hostile superiors within their orders, local political pressures, and the deep-rooted misogynistic assumptions of the Church establishment. This unprecedented volume demonstrates how reform circles throughout the Italian peninsula each tailored Savonarola’s life and works to their particular communities’ regionally specific needs. Savonarola’s Women is an important reconstruction of women’s influence on one of the most important and controversial religious movements in premodern Europe.

The Reception of the Printed Image in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries

The Reception of the Printed Image in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries PDF Author: Grażyna Jurkowlaniec
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000173127
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 421

Book Description
This book examines the early development of the graphic arts from the perspectives of material things, human actors and immaterial representations while broadening the geographic field of inquiry to Central Europe and the British Isles and considering the reception of the prints on other continents. The role of human actors proves particularly prominent, i.e. the circumstances that informed creators’, producers’, owners’ and beholders’ motivations and responses. Certainly, such a complex relationship between things, people and images is not an exclusive feature of the pre-modern period’s print cultures. However, the rise of printmaking challenged some established rules in the arts and visual realms and thus provides a fruitful point of departure for further study of the development of the various functions and responses to printed images in the sixteenth century. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, print history, book history and European studies. Joachim of Fiore and the Myth of the Eternal Evangel in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Joachim of Fiore and the Myth of the Eternal Evangel in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries PDF Author: Warwick Gould
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 456

Book Description
This renowned study provides a `map' of the influence of the powerful, original theology of Joachim of Fiore (c.1132-1202). Radically revised since its first publication in 1987, and augmented with further prophetic voices and symbols from the past, it confirms the deep structures of visions of the future while demonstrating and questioning the persistence of Joachimist themes in the twentieth-century fin de siecle.
