Book Description
An experimental visualization study of spray and combustion processes under simulated high-power-density diesel (HPD) combustion conditions is carried out. The scope of work includes characterization of high-pressure injection on test rig, macroscopic and microscopic characterization of non-evaporative sprays in atmosphere ambient condition or in pressurized chamber, and direct visualization of spray and combustion processes inside a single-cylinder optically accessible research engine. The results provide very interesting and dynamic information on spray structure, showing spray angle variations, primary breakup processes, and spray asymmetry under different combinations of injection systems and nozzle geometry. The injection systems tested included electronic unit injector (EUI), hydraulic unit injector (HEUI), and high-pressure common rail (HPCR) with both valve-covered orifice (VCO) and mini-sac nozzles. The near-field spray behavior is shown to strongly depend on the nozzle geometry, needle lift dynamics, and injection pressure, which is a function of the injection system. Some complementary numerical simulations using new transient schemes (space-time method) and primary breakup models (turbulent and cavitational) to better correlate spray and injector design are also discussed. Combustion visualization inside an optically accessible diesel engine equipped with HEUI injection system capable of both single and multi-stage injections was also successfully conducted. Nozzle hole flow area, injection pressure, and length of rate-shaping pipe are the dominating parameters that control the injection rate. The results showed that ignition delay and heat release of pre-mixed combustion is significantly reduced with increase of charge air density and temperature, and with pilot injection.

Modelling Diesel Combustion

Modelling Diesel Combustion PDF Author: P. A. Lakshminarayanan
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 981166742X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 419

Book Description
This book comprehensively discusses diesel combustion phenomena like ignition delay, fuel-air mixing, rate of heat release, and emissions of smoke, particulate and nitric oxide. It enables quantitative evaluation of these important phenomena and parameters. Most importantly, it attempts to model them with constants that are independent of engine types and hence they could be applied by the engineers and researchers for a general engine. This book emphasizes the importance of the spray at the wall in precisely describing the heat release and emissions for most of the engines on and off-road. It gives models for heat release and emissions. Every model is thoroughly validated by detailed experiments using a broad range of engines. The book describes an elegant quasi-one-dimensional model for heat release in diesel engines with single as well as multiple injections. The book describes how the two aspects, namely, fuel injection rate and the diameter of the combustion bowl in the piston, have enabled meeting advanced emission, noise, and performance standards. The book also discusses the topics of computational fluid dynamics encompassing RANS and LES models of turbulence. Given the contents, this book will be useful for students, researchers and professionals working in the area of vehicle engineering and engine technology. This book will also be a good professional book for practising engineers in the field of combustion engines and automotive engineering.

Combustion Phenomena

Combustion Phenomena PDF Author: Jozef Jarosinski
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0849384095
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 236

Book Description
Extensively using experimental and numerical illustrations, CombustionPhenomena: Selected Mechanisms of Flame Formation, Propagation, and Extinction provides a comprehensive survey of the fundamental processes of flame formation, propagation, and extinction. Taking you through the stages of combustion, leading experts visually display, mathematically explain, and clearly theorize on important physical topics of combustion. After a historical introduction to the field, they discuss combustion chemistry, flammability limits, and spark ignition. They also study counterflow twin-flame configuration, flame in a vortex core, the propagation characteristics of edge flames, instabilities, and tulip flames. In addition, the book describes flame extinction in narrow channels, global quenching of premixed flames by turbulence, counterflow premixed flame extinction limits, the interaction of flames with fluids in rotating vessels, and turbulent flames. The final chapter explores diffusion flames as well as combustion in spark- and compression-ignition engines. It also examines the transition from deflagration to detonation, along with the detonation wave structure. With downloadable resources of images that beautifully illustrate a range of combustion phenomena, this book facilitates a practical understanding of the processes occurring in the conception, spread, and extinguishment of a flame. It will help you on your way to finding solutions to real issues encountered in transportation, power generation, industrial processes, chemical engineering, and fire and explosion hazards.
