Tactical Display for Soldiers

Tactical Display for Soldiers PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309175119
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
This book examines the human factors issues associated with the development, testing, and implementation of helmet-mounted display technology in the 21st Century Land Warrior System. Because the framework of analysis is soldier performance with the system in the full range of environments and missions, the book discusses both the military context and the characteristics of the infantry soldiers who will use the system. The major issues covered include the positive and negative effects of such a display on the local and global situation awareness of the individual soldier, an analysis of the visual and psychomotor factors associated with each design feature, design considerations for auditory displays, and physical sources of stress and the implications of the display for affecting the soldier's workload. The book proposes an innovative approach to research and testing based on a three-stage strategy that begins in the laboratory, moves to controlled field studies, and culminates in operational testing.

Video Displays, Work, and Vision

Video Displays, Work, and Vision PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309033888
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
Along with the widespread use of computers have come growing fears that working in front of video display terminals (VDTs) can irritate and even damage the eyes. Separating scientific fact from popular opinion, this report takes a critical look at the link between VDT use and eye discomfort and disease as well as at changes in visual performance and oculomotor function. Drawing on information from ergonomics, illuminating engineering, and industrial and organizational psychology, the report gives practical advice on optimal workstation design to improve the comfort, performance, and job satisfaction of VDT users.

Work with Display Units 89

Work with Display Units 89 PDF Author: Louis Berlinguet
Publisher: North Holland
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 590

Book Description
Most of the articles contained in this volume are concerned with the prevalence of symptoms among VDU operators and the hazards involved with the use of this technology. Many authors suggest useful means of prevention. While recent emphasis has been on problems related to the physical VDU environment, attention is now being focused on the effects of work organization. In the same vein, the field of human-computer interaction has undergone rapid growth. The studies presented will help in the design of software and learning tools and will contribute to the reduction of the mental workload of operators. At the same time, it is important to assess the social consequences of the implementation of VDUs. A number of chapters analyze media communication of research results, and the resulting public debates, and researchers from developing countries describe the difficulties and opportunities associated with technology transfer.

Handbook of Human-Computer Interaction

Handbook of Human-Computer Interaction PDF Author: M.G. Helander
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483295133
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 1202

Book Description
This Handbook is concerned with principles of human factors engineering for design of the human-computer interface. It has both academic and practical purposes; it summarizes the research and provides recommendations for how the information can be used by designers of computer systems. The articles are written primarily for the professional from another discipline who is seeking an understanding of human-computer interaction, and secondarily as a reference book for the professional in the area, and should particularly serve the following: computer scientists, human factors engineers, designers and design engineers, cognitive scientists and experimental psychologists, systems engineers, managers and executives working with systems development. The work consists of 52 chapters by 73 authors and is organized into seven sections. In the first section, the cognitive and information-processing aspects of HCI are summarized. The following group of papers deals with design principles for software and hardware. The third section is devoted to differences in performance between different users, and computer-aided training and principles for design of effective manuals. The next part presents important applications: text editors and systems for information retrieval, as well as issues in computer-aided engineering, drawing and design, and robotics. The fifth section introduces methods for designing the user interface. The following section examines those issues in the AI field that are currently of greatest interest to designers and human factors specialists, including such problems as natural language interface and methods for knowledge acquisition. The last section includes social aspects in computer usage, the impact on work organizations and work at home.
