Book Description
How do you lead virtual teams to high performance? Globalisation is here to stay - yet no one is really prepared. Many teams tasked with managing globalisation are clearly out of their depth. This is primarily because these teams work virtually and internationally over great distances. The team members no longer sit face to face in their offices, instead they communicate across countries and continents via modern communication media. Leading a conventional team to top performance is difficult enough, not least because of the inevitable group dynamic involved. When the context becomes virtual, this all too often leads to management failure. This book describes the art of leading virtual teams in an entertaining style including practical tips, helpful suggestions, and numerous illustrative examples that span many industries and countries along the four core challenges of virtual team leadership today. Gary Thomas is a trainer, consultant and managing director at assist International Human Resources, an internationally operating HR organisation based in Germany. As many of his clients are international organisations and corporations, he has been assisting intercultural and virtual teams and leaders for over 20 years to develop their full potential.

Launching Space Objects: Issues of Liability and Future Prospects

Launching Space Objects: Issues of Liability and Future Prospects PDF Author: V. Kayser
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0306484056
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
Launch activities performed by private entities deal with a complex legal environment. The Space Treaties provide a general liability framework. Launch participants are subject to regulatory or institutional control, and to domestic liability laws. Specific contractual practice has developed due to insurance limitations, the inter-participants' waivers of liability and claims. This book synthesizes information on the norms of play, to allow the grasp of their relative weight and interactions in the assessment of liability risk for launch activities. It reveals a legal framework presently lacking sufficient predictability for an efficient liability risk management: the waivers of liability suffer weaknesses as do all such clauses, and lack uniformity and reliability; and the Space Treaties contain ambiguous terms preventing predictable determination of the States responsible for authorizing and supervising launch activities and for damage compensation, and do not reflect the liability of launch operators. This book offers suggestions of new approaches for: harmonizing waivers of liability to improve their consistency, validity and flow-down; and improving the Space Treaties for their implementation to non-governmental launch activities. In the launch community, the need for lawmaking is less compelling than in fields such as aviation. Nevertheless, adjustments to the present framework are proposed through model clauses and an international instrument, for further thinking and contribution by those sharing the opinion that creative lawmaking is needed now to prepare for tomorrow's endeavors.

Connecting Worlds and People

Connecting Worlds and People PDF Author: Dagmar Freist
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1317162013
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 165

Book Description
In recent decades historians have emphasized just how dynamic and varied early modern Europe was. Previously held notions of monolithic and static societies have now been replaced with a model in which new ideas, different cultures and communities jostle for attention and influence. Building upon the concept of interaction, the essays in this volume develop and explore the idea with specific reference to the ways in which diasporas could act as translocal societies, connecting worlds and peoples that may not otherwise have been linked. The volume looks at the ways in which diasporas or diasporic groups, such as the Herrnhuters, the Huguenots, the Quakers, Jews, the Mennonites, the Moriscos and others, could function as intermediaries to connect otherwise separated communities and societies. All contributors analyse the respective groups’ internal and external networks, social relations and the settings of social interactions, looking at the entangled networks of diaspora communities and their effects upon the societies and regions they linked through those networks. The collection takes a fresh look at early modern diasporas, combining religious, cultural, social and economic history to better understand how early modern communication patterns and markets evolved, how consumption patterns changed and what this meant for social, economic and cultural change, how this impacted on what we understand as early developments towards globalization, and how early developments towards globalization, in turn, were constitutive of these.

Transgression and the Inexistent

Transgression and the Inexistent PDF Author: Mehdi Belhaj Kacem
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 147252862X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
A contemporary philosopher of Tunisian origin, Mehdi Belhaj Kacem is here published in English for the first time. His new book, Transgression and the Inexistent: A Philosophical Vocabulary, is a comprehensive foray into Kacem's elaborate philosophical system in twenty-seven discreet chapters, each dedicated to a single concept. In each chapter, he explicates a critical re-thinking of ordinary lived experiences - such as desire, irony, play - or traditional philosophical ideas – such as catharsis, mimesis, techne – in light of 'the spirit of nihilism' that marks the contemporary human condition. Kacem gained notoriety in the domain of critical theory amid his controversial break with his mentor and leading contemporary philosopher, Alain Badiou. Transgression and the Inexistent lays out the essential concepts of his philosophical system: it is the most complete and synthetic book of his philosophical work, as well as being one of the most provocative in its claims. As a Francophone author engaging with contemporary world thought, he is able to develop novel philosophical perspectives that reach beyond the Middle East or the Continental, and the East/West binary. This is the book's first publication in any language, constituting a much-awaited first translation of Kacem into English.
