The Closed Shop in American Trade Unions (Classic Reprint)

The Closed Shop in American Trade Unions (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Frank T. Stockton
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780656673636
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
Excerpt from The Closed Shop in American Trade Unions The primary aim of the present study is to set forth the facts concerning the closed shop. It is proposed, first, to trace the manner in which the closed-shop rule developed among the early trade societies in America, and to disclose the motives which led to its incorporation into trade-union policy. Secondly, the history of the closed-shop movement will be set forth. The relative importance attached to the enforcement of the closed shop at various stages in our industrial development and the efforts which employers have made to check its operation will be shown. Next, the forms of the closed shop as they exist in various unions will be described. This analysis will make clear what the closed shop is and how far exclusion from employment is involved in its working. The manner in which the closed shop is established and the methods by which it is enforced will then engage our attention. When the closed shop has thus been described in detail, it will be possible in succeeding chapters to study its value as a trade-union device and its economic import. Book Description
Excerpt from The Tyranny of Trade Unions This may seem a strong statement of the position. It is not an over-strong statement. We are actually threatened with the ruin of the civilisation that has taken so many centuries of thought and effort to build up. The crisis demands clear thinking, courageous thinking. Masks and pretences must be stripped away and naked facts faced. We must get out of the atmosphere of vote-seeking which to-day more than all else obscures the minds of national leaders. We must get out of that mood of easy optimism which trusts to the country to muddle through somehow. We must squarely ask the British workers (who are, when in their true and right mind, the best industrial army the world has ever produced) to consider their present position and their present leadership in the light of their common sense and their patriotism. Pages : 114

Book Description
Excerpt from The Restoration of Trade Union Conditions In the increasing stress of international competition, much will depend for this country on the rapidity and the smoothness with which our industries can resume their normal work. If this resumption is hampered by ill-feeling and suspicion between employers and workmen - still more, if it is delayed by industrial war - the loss to the community will be incalculable. A grave peril hangs over the nation on the coming of peace. Second only in urgency to the problem of demobilization is the problem of the restoration of what are called Trade Union conditions. Living Or Dead Labor Unions (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Caroline Nelson

Book Description
Excerpt from Living or Dead Labor Unions Every day in every country there is an army of men, women and children rushing forth to do battle with all their strength of their bodies and minds in the mines, mills and shops. They shiver in their thin clothing in the cold winter mornings. They hug their pieces of bread with perhaps a slice of pie and bottle of cold coffee for their lunch. They hitch themselves to their machines and tools that callous their hands and callous their minds to the thundering, roarings of the machinery. But they cannot callous their lungs and blood to poisonous fumes, to stifling air, to bad food and to little rest. These things eat away their vitality and make them old long before their time. This army of workers struggle now here and now there to better their conditions. In that struggle they have to take their lives into their hands, for they are clubbed by the police, shot down by the soldiers, outlawed by the courts, and while they work they are often maimed and crippled. This is the working class war fought with empty hands for the principle of life. Now and then they gain, now and then they are beaten. But forever this army struggles onward throughout the ages, every time it has been beaten it rises again and yet again. War cannot end until this army is victorious; for it cannot and will not make peace with slavery and injustice. In the working class war all property and the lives of their enemies arc held to be sacred. If they destroy any lives, machinery, buildings, they are called murderers, hoodlums, social vipers, etc. But the moment the privileged classes war, both property and life cease to be sacred. Here the same deeds on a much larger scale become glorious and heroic. When the workers kill and destroy in the interest of the ruling classes they arc patriots, courageous and brave. What kind of ethics are these? They are ruling class ethics. They are nothing but shams and hypocrisy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
