Dynamics of Molecular Collisions
Author: W. Miller
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475706448
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 391
Book Description
Activity in any theoretical area is usually stimulated by new experimental techniques and the resulting opportunity of measuring phenomena that were previously inaccessible. Such has been the case in the area under consideration he re beginning about fifteen years aga when the possibility of studying chemical reactions in crossed molecular beams captured the imagination of physical chemists, for one could imagine investigating chemical kinetics at the same level of molecular detail that had previously been possible only in spectroscopic investigations of molecular stucture. This created an interest among chemists in scattering theory, the molecular level description of a bimolecular collision process. Many other new and also powerful experimental techniques have evolved to supplement the molecular be am method, and the resulting wealth of new information about chemical dynamics has generated the present intense activity in molecular collision theory. During the early years when chemists were first becoming acquainted with scattering theory, it was mainly a matter of reading the physics literature because scattering experiments have long been the staple of that field. It was natural to apply the approximations and models that had been developed for nuclear and elementary particle physics, and although some of them were useful in describing molecular collision phenomena, many were not.

Kinetics and Mechanism
Author: John W. Moore
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9780471035589
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 486
Book Description
The third edition of a classic text originally by Frost and Pearson, that describes the fundamental principles and established practices that apply to the study and the rates and mechanisms of homogeneous chemical reactions in the gas phase and in solution. Incorporates new advances made during the past 20 years in the study of individual molecular collisions by molecular-beam, laser applications to experimental kinetics, theoretical treatments of reaction rates and our understanding of the principles that govern rates of reaction in solution. Presents numerous examples of the deduction of mechanism from experiment, including intimate details such as stereochemistry and the dependence of reaction pathway on the exact energy states of reacting particles.

Pages : 406
Book Description
Aerodynamics is a science engaged in the investigation of the motion of air and other gases and their interaction with bodies, and is one of the most important bases of the aeronautic and astronautic techniques. The continuous improvement of the configurations of the airplanes and the space vehicles aid the constant enhancement of their performances are closely related with the development of the aerodynamics. In the design of new flying vehicles the aerodynamics will play more and more important role. The undertakings of aeronautics and astronautics in our country have gained achievements of world interest, the aerodynamics community has made outstanding contributions for the development of these undertakings and the science of aerodynamics. To promote further the development of the aerodynamics, meet the challenge in the new century, summary the experience, cultivate the professional personnel and to serve better the cause of aeronautics and astronautics and the national economy, the present Series of Modern Aerodynamics is organized and published.

Extended Thermodynamics
Author: Ingo Müller
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468404474
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 238
Book Description
Physicists firmly believe that the differential equations of nature should be hyperbolic so as to exclude action at a distance; yet the equations of irreversible thermodynamics - those of Navier-Stokes and Fourier - are parabolic. This incompatibility between the expectation of physicists and the classical laws of thermodynamics has prompted the formulation of extended thermodynamics. After describing the motifs and early evolution of this new branch of irreversible thermodynamics, the authors apply the theory to mon-atomic gases, mixtures of gases, relativistic gases, and "gases" of phonons and photons. The discussion brings into perspective the various phenomena called second sound, such as heat propagation, propagation of shear stress and concentration, and the second sound in liquid helium. The formal mathematical structure of extended thermodynamics is exposed and the theory is shown to be fully compatible with the kinetic theory of gases. The study closes with the testing of extended thermodynamics through the exploitation of its predictions for measurements of light scattering and sound propagation.
