Backscattered Spectra from Rotating and Vibrating Short Wires and Their Relation to the Identification Problem
Author: Ronald G. Newburgh
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Backscattering
Languages : en
Pages : 40
Book Description
In the report Rayleigh scattering for a short wire is examined for two simple motions, rotation and vibration. Rotation of the wire causes an amplitude modulation and vibration causes a phase modulation. Each of these modulations influences the backscattered spectra so that the characteristic frequency of the periodic motion appears. For the rotating wire, it is twice the rotation frequency. From the spectra it is possible to recognize the type of motion responsible. The study therefore serves as a first step in the development of models for complicated motions of actual objects such as tanks and trucks, thereby leading to possible vehicle signature classification schemes. The appendices include: a brief discussion of the formalism of polarization scattering matrices; a short examination of the relation between the scattered spectra due to periodic motions and the conventional Doppler effect; and an examination of the analogy between the rotating and vibrating wires and molecules as conventional Raman scatters, including a brief section on the energetics of the scattering process.

Atoms, Molecules and Photons
Author: Wolfgang Demtröder
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642102980
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 601
Book Description
This introduction to Atomic and Molecular Physics explains how our present model of atoms and molecules has been developed during the last two centuries by many experimental discoveries and from the theoretical side by the introduction of quantum physics to the adequate description of micro-particles. It illustrates the wave model of particles by many examples and shows the limits of classical description. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with atoms and molecules and its potential for spectroscopy is outlined in more detail and in particular lasers as modern spectroscopic tools are discussed more thoroughly. Many examples and problems with solutions should induce the reader to an intense active cooperation.

Molecular Vibrations: An Algebraic And Nonlinear Approach
Author: Guozhen Wu
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9813270713
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
This book focuses on the main idea that highly-excited molecular vibration is a nonlinear, many-body and semiclassical system. Therefore, many ideas and techniques in nonlinear fields such as chaos, resonance, Lyapunov exponent, etc. can be incorporated into this study. Together with the Lie algebraic coset algorithm, readers are able to approach the topics in a simple arithmetic and realistic way in contrast to the traditional solving of Schrödinger equation.Covering the author's research in over two decades, these works bridge the gaps between molecular vibration and nonlinear sciences, many new characters are introduced for molecular highly-excited vibration from a fresh viewpoint of nonlinearity, especially, the chaos. Related works of the elementary ideas in this field can be found in the first three chapters for the readers to be familiar with, while the rest of the chapters offer concrete examples with flourishing ideas and results on system dynamics which are not known or neglected by the traditional wave function algorithm.
