Nearly Circular Transfer Trajectories for Descending Satellites

Nearly Circular Transfer Trajectories for Descending Satellites PDF Author: George M. Low
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerodynamics
Languages : en
Pages : 24

Book Description
Simplified expressions describing the transfer from a satellite orbit to the point of atmospheric entry are derived. The expressions are limited to altitude changes that are small compared with the earth's radius, and velocity changes that are small compared with satellite velocity. They are further restricted to motion about a spherical, nonrotating earth. The transfer trajectory resulting from the application of thrust in any direction at any point in an elliptic orbit is considered. Expressions for errors in distance (miss distance) and entry angle due to an initial misalinement and magnitude error of the deflecting thrust are presented. The guidance and accuracy requirements to establish a circular orbit, and orbit corrections are also discussed.

Investigation of Atmospheric Reentry for the Space Maneuver Vehicle

Investigation of Atmospheric Reentry for the Space Maneuver Vehicle PDF Author: Dennis J. McNabb
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781423516514
Category : Aerodynamics
Languages : en
Pages : 95

Book Description
This study investigated the atmospheric reentry of the Space Maneuver Vehicle from low-earth orbit using an entry guidance concept similar to the Space Shuttle. The Space Maneuver Vehicle was modeled as a point mass with aerodynamic properties as determined using Newtonian impact theory. For the rarefied-flow transition regime bridging formulae are used to capture the effects of both hypersonic continuum flow and free molecular flow. Constraints to the reentry are developed and a reentry corridor is defined in the drag- velocity plane. Bank angle modulation is established as the primary means for controlling drag and range. The guidance concept is applied to both a high inclination orbit and a low inclination orbit with cross-range requirement. Monte Carlo error analysis validates the ability of the control algorithm to guide reentry in the presence of initial state errors, as well as atmospheric variations. Rotation of the Orbital Plane of a Satellite

Rotation of the Orbital Plane of a Satellite PDF Author: Hermann O. F. Scharn

Book Description
The rotation of the orbital plane of a satellite achieved by a thrust orthogonal to the radius vector and the velocity vector of the satellite is investigated as a function of the propellant mass-to-gross mass ratio, the thrust function and the motor burning time. The problem is treated with a new method which does not presume the knowledge of the powered flight trajectory of the satellite. The investigation is based on two properties of the unit vectors perpendicular to the planes of the osculating ellipses associated with the powered flight trajectory, namely the geodesic curvature and the length of the curve described by this unit vector while the satellite is on its transition course. With these two auxiliary terms the qualitative discussion of the angle between the orbital planes appears to become rather simple. For the quantitative determination of the angle between the orbital planes an ordinary homogeneous differential equation of the third order, which is valid for all types of orbits and thrust functions, is derived. In the special case of a constant acceleration of a satellite in circular orbit, its solution can be written immediately in closed form. (Author).
