Book Description
Here approximately two hundred works by French and Spanish artists chart the development of this cultural influence and map a fascinating shift in the paradigm of painting, from Idealism to Realism, from Italy to Spain, from Renaissance to Baroque. Above all, these images demonstrate how direct contact with Spanish painting fired the imagination of nineteenth-century French artists and brought about the triumph of Realism in the 1860s, and with it a foundation for modern art."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Description
Excerpt from Velazquez and Murillo: A Descriptive and Historical Catalogue of the Works of Don Diego De Silva Velazquez and Bartolome Esteban Murillo, Comprising a Classified List of Their Paintings, With Descriptions In cataloguing the contents of my portfolios it became interesting to ascertain the ownership of the pictures, to trace their history, and to note their correspondence with, or variance from, other works similar in subject or composition. These comparisons were greatly aided by the photographs, drawings, etc., which made it possible to detect differences or resemblances, too slight to be carried in the eye or stored in the memory. After a time, greatly to my surprise, I found that I had made tolerably complete catalogues of the works of some of the more important Spanish masters, - at least I had the materials for such catalogues. All that was needed was to arrange these materials, and to write out the notes in proper form for publication. This I have done, with the hope of adding something to the existing knowledge on the subject, and the further hope of encouraging some more capable person to do well what I have done but imperfectly. Spanish Art in Britain and Ireland, 1750-1920

Spanish Art in Britain and Ireland, 1750-1920 PDF Author: Enriqueta Harris
Publisher: Tamesis Books
ISBN: 185566223X
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 330

Book Description
From the Golden Age to Goya. This is the first study wholly devoted to reception of Spanish art in Britain and Ireland. Examining the extent and sources of knowledge of Spanish art in the British Isles during an age of increasing contact, particularly in theaftermath of the Peninsular War, it contains contributions by leading scholars, including reprints of three essays by Enriqueta Harris Frankfort, to whose memory this book is dedicated. Focusing on Spanish art from the Golden Age to Goya, these studies chart the growth in understanding and appreciation of the Spanish School, and its punctuation by controversies and continuing distrust of religious images in Protestant Britain, as well as by the successive `discoveries' of individual artists - Murillo, Velázquez, Ribera, Zurbarán, El Greco and Goya. The book publishes important new research on art importation, collecting and dealing, and discusses the increase in access to andscholarship on works of art, including their reproduction through both traditional prints and copies and the newly invented photographic methods. It also considers for the first time the role of women in reflecting taste for thearts of Spain. It is richly illustrated with 17 colour and 54 black and white illustrations. NIGEL GLENDINNING is Emeritus Professor of Spanish and Fellow of Queen Mary University of London. HILARY MACARTNEY isHonorary Research Fellow of the Institute for Art History, University of Glasgow.
