Flowering Plants of the Galápagos PDF Author: Conley K. McMullen
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501728768
Category : Nature

Pages : 386

Book Description
The Galápagos are home to a wide-ranging assortment of unusual plants and animals. The islands became famous as the site of Charles Darwin's research leading to his theory of evolution by natural selection, and their magnificent flora and fauna continue to draw visitors from around the world. Based on the author's 16 years of fieldwork and featuring his exceptional photography, Flowering Plants of the Galápagos is the first accessible, in-depth yet compact guide to the plant life of the area. An invaluable resource for tourists, natural history enthusiasts, and professionals, the book: • Introduces the botanical history of the islands and their varied ecological zones • Allows easy identification of 436 flowering plants (77 families, 192 genera, and 390 species) • Covers endemic plants found exclusively on the islands; native plants, which grow on the Galápagos and elsewhere; and exotic plants present as a result of human actions • Offers thorough accounts of the plants which give the scientific, common, and family names; range; islands inhabited; habitat; description; and additional notes of interest • Is richly illustrated with 266 color photographs of flowering plants and 117 of plant pollinators, vegetation zones, non-flowering plants, and the islands themselves • Organizes species by form, leaf arrangement, and flower color and includes descriptive plant drawings to aid in identification • Provides a map of the Galápagos and a list of plants likely to be seen at popular tourist sites

A Botanical Survey of the Galapagos Islands (Classic Reprint)

A Botanical Survey of the Galapagos Islands (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Alban Stewart
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780331792119
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 330

Book Description
Excerpt from A Botanical Survey of the Galapagos Islands Unfortunately many of the former collectors of plants remained but a short time upon the islands, and as most of them were not botanists, our knowledge of the general botanical conditions has remained rather meager. It was the intention at first to incorporate the entire botani cal results of the expedition in a single paper, but as the present paper has assumed greater proportions than was expected, it seems best to divide the subject and publish the parts separately. The present paper consists of a rather detailed account of the different species of vascular plants, including their range in elevation and their distribution on the different islands; a brief description of the different botani cal regions; an account of the general features of the flora; an account of the factors governing the growth Of vegetation; and an account, so far as possible, of the evidence Offered by the collection concerning the origin of the islands and of the flora. A second paper will deal entirely with a description of the botanical conditions on each island of the group, and short papers will treat of the lichens and mosses. Guide to Standard Floras of the World

Guide to Standard Floras of the World PDF Author: David G. Frodin
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781139428651
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1136

Book Description
This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Endemism in Vascular Plants

Endemism in Vascular Plants PDF Author: Carsten Hobohm
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940076913X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 355

Book Description
The book is the first comprehensive analysis of the macroecology and geobotany of endemic vascular plants with case-studies and analyses from different regions in the world. Endemism is a pre-extinction phenomenon. Endemics are threatened with extinction. Due to international nature conservation policies and due to the perception of the public the concept’s importance is increasing. Endemism can result from different biological and environmental processes. Depending on the process conservation measures should be adapted. Endemic vascular plant taxa, in the setting of their species composition and vegetation types are important features of landscapes and indicators of the quality of relating habitats. The book is an important basis for biologists, ecologists, geographers, planners and managers of nature reserves and national parks, and people generally interested in nature conservation and biogeography of vascular plants.
